Review

“Smart new ideas include salads on a stick and a dozen kinds of deviled eggs.”
—Food & Wine

The Picnic is a gorgeously illustrated cookbook and a treasure trove of inspiration. In addition to its whimsically adorned recipes, there are instructions for solving picnic crises and tips on food presentation.”
—Entertainment Weekly

“Terrific. . . . Picnic basket essentials to make everything easy.”
—Portland Oregonian

The Picnic will turn you into a sort of MacGyver of picnics.”
—Eater Portland

“Ridiculously pretty . . . this book is your guide to getting food from your kitchen to the great outdoors.”
—Epicurious

“A lovely, hand-illustrated cookbook which covers the ABCs of picnicking. It’s full of useful tips.”
—Design*Sponge

“The only picnic guide you’ll ever need.”
—Food Network DISH

“Charming. . . . Perusing these colorfully illustrated pages, readers will learn how to select an appropriate site, cope with inclement weather, transport unwieldy or temperature-sensitive foods, and assemble a ‘glorious’ charcuterie board. The authors’ classy recipes for appetizers, salads, drinks, and more (e.g. kale panzanella with burnt lemon Caesar dressing, smoky tea-brined fried chicken, vanilla bean shortcakes with strawberries in basil syrup) all include thoughtful instructions for storage and serving. A fresh look at outdoor entertaining that’s just in time for spring and summer. Highly recommended.”
—Library Journal

The only conclusion to be drawn is that Marmaduke is a vicious ex-boyfriend writing Amazon reviews under a pseudonym. This book is not only beautiful enough to display as art, it is brimming with creative recipes sure to please your picnic partner! I have been gifting it left and right.

"The Picnic..." is filled with new and delightful recipes and ideas to make you the envy of fellow picnic goers. The writing is light, witty, and informative of picnic etiquette and know how, while gorgeous illistrations grace the pages. I bought a copy for myself and each recipe I have tested is one I will make again. It also makes a lovely gift - I have already gifted three copies! (And for the record, the tip about the standard picnic table size has saved me trips to the park with my measuring tape!)

Everyone likes a picnic, but for those who haven’t prepared lots of them, it's important to have a primer with enough information to plan things perfectly. The Picnic: Recipes and Inspiration from Basket to Blanket isn’t just a book of good recipes to take on a picnic; rather, it's a great textbook with information on planning, finding a perfect site, the right type of blanket to use, containers to store the food, tools needed, and even a definitive packing list. Tips about food safety and even how to dress for a picnic are also included.

As far as recipes go, there are over a dozen variations on the deviled egg – a must-have for most typical picnics, and numerous recipes for salads (including several to be served on a stick), beverages, appetizers, mains such as a muffuletta sandwich, quiche, roasted tea-brined chicken, poached salmon, roasted meats, and even Coronation chicken (a popular British dish adapted from the Coronation chicken served at the Queen’s coronation) in lettuce cups. The desserts are a bit more exciting than brownies, cookies, and sheet cakes with a plastic lid: rhubarb pavlovas, hazelnut cupcakes, several parfaits in jars, and a few fancy cookies. The authors have also added suggested menus that sound so good, readers will find themselves planning a picnic every week. Even though there are recipes for typical picnic dishes, most of the recipes are innovative, interesting, and of course (at least the ones I tried) delicious. The instructions are easy to follow and the recipes turn out exactly as described. Some of the recipes are geared for more experienced cooks, but there are enough easy recipes, that this book is also good for beginners.

I really love the concept of this book--all about picnics. The artwork is simple, charming, and inspiring. The cover itself is a treat for book lovers. The menus, notes, suggestions, and recipes are lovely and sophisticated but not complicated. The authors are part of the Portland Picnic Society, so they really enjoy picnics and it shows. I only wish the authors would publish a sister cookbook for those of us who are vegan and gluten free. Most of the recipes contain dairy, meat, eggs, gluten, or fish, so I gave this book to my mother who eats all of those foods. And she loves it! I highly recommend this book to omnivores everywhere!

This is a must have! In this age of gmo and chemicals it is nice to have picnic basket ideas so you can go on a day trip with out stoping for that terrible fast and chain restraunt food! I love the liver pate recipe in here, and there is also a wide variety of deviled egg ideas that I also like.

I was pleasantly surprised by just how gorgeous this little book is. It has a wealth of recipes and suggested menus. Very well written and lovely illustrations, I've shown it to several friends and family. I've even given it to a niece as part of her picnic wedding gift that I put together in a Scout hardbottom cooler. It would work well for tailgates or porch parties, too. I've only made one recipe--the Elderflower Pimm's Cup cocktail, but it was delicious and aesthetically pleasing. I look forward to using this for many years.

This is the best cookbook ever... based on not only the content and its subject, but the ARTWORK! I am in the category of "buys cookbooks for inspiration" so that is why I am so enthusiastic. I bought this cookbook in Colorado for $20 and now see it on Amazon for $14 and I'm not irritated with myself. That's saying a lot. They could charge $35 and I still would have bought it.
Strokes of genius, besides the artwork.... The niçoise salad; the indivdual crudités in small mason jars; the caviar topped deviled eggs with sour cream (although I will use crème fraïche); the education on picnic accessories plus the resource guide for buying them. Bravo!

This BOOK! It's incredibly beautiful, loaded with amazing ideas and recipes, and both functional and visually appealing at once. I plan to purchase this book for others in the future as gifts, and LOVE having mine when it comes to planning get-togethers. I can't wait for the weather to get a bit cooler so I can create a beautiful picnic for my friends.

This book is NOT only for picnics, though, so don't let that stop you from purchasing it. It's loaded with ideas for things like "classy crudites", hand pies, delicious sounding sauces, bubbly beverages, you name it. It's a great resource for the entertainer as you'll gain so many ideas from this delicious book.
