Tim Clarkson makes generally a good job interpreting the different, always scarce sources and deducing what most probably happened, thus solving many "Pictish puzzles" in his own way and bringing new ideas into the history of the Picts. Another positive aspect that I have to stress is that the book is written in quite a vivid style. I previously have read books about the early middle ages that I found, to put it blandly, tedious to read, going on for pages about most boring aspects and losing my curiosity on the way so that I had difficulties finishing them without forcing myself. This book is not like that at all; it captures your interest from the beginning and keeps in until the end. All in all a book that can truly be recommended.
