This is one of ELP's better albums, right up there with Trilogy and Tarkus. Although it is primarily a interpretive cover of Modest Mussorsgky's 1874 piano suite of the same name, the inclusion in the 'Blues Variations' in the middle of the album gives it a very ELP feel, with Emerson improvising over very tight, stylized backup by bassist Lake and drummer Palmer. 'The Curse of Baby Yaga' is another gem, starting with a wah-wah guitar and bass bit, then segueing into a brilliant Emerson transition solo riding atop Palmer's precision drumming, then onto Lake's vocals. Emerson's moog is in full bloom, all cylinders of ELP are firing, and this is live!
