Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In her auspicious debut, Warner kicks off the Blood Rose trilogy by introducing the Wilkins brothers—Brady, Andrew Jack Jackson, and Patrick Hank Henry—of RosaRoja in 1869's New Mexico Territory. On a stagecoach ride destined for disaster, eldest brother Brady encounters prim, proper, and very pregnant Jessica Abigail Rebecca Thornton, a flame-haired authoress, milliner, and British heiress. On the run from her violent, controlling brother-in-law, John Crawford, and searching for her brother, George Adrian, Jessica is in danger of losing her Northumberland estate and determined to find a way to hold onto it. Brady offers refuge, and Warner develops their romance with well-paced finesse and great character work. Along with greedy, domineering John, vengeful ex-con Sancho Ramirez (whose father was RosaRoja's former owner) and his murderous half-brother also threaten the couple's happiness. While following her protagonists overcoming enemies within and without, Warner makes great use of the vivid Old West setting. (Jan.)

after reading same all same all stories for the past month (some from well known authors!) - finally to read a story that was not done 20 thousand times before - it really was a wonderful and sweet love story - My only complaint - not long enough! her description of life and hardships and the landscaping, and the build-up of the relationship were very good - I cannot wait for the next story.

Oh my gosh, I've got housework to do, supper to make, and really need to catch up on sleep. But instead I stay up until all hours to find out how the story comes out. Kaki Warner's book, Pieces of Sky, is a great escape into another world! It's a fast-flowing read with wonderfully developed characters, some you love to hate, and others (namely Brady, of course) you'd love to love.

Take it to bed with you tonite, and call in sick in the morning!

Pieces of Sky is a page turner set in the old west. Ms. Warner has well developed characters and an involved story that touches many characters, not just the main ones. She weaves a story where you feel like you know each character and personality. I believe anyone - not just romance readers - would enjoy the storytelling of this old west adventure. It's one of those books where you end up thinking about the characters days after you have finished reading. Can't wait for the next installment!

In 1869 in New Mexico Territory, British heiress Jessica Thornton knows she is a long way from her Northumberland home. Pregnant she desperately needs to find her brother George Adrian before her martinet abusive brother-in-law John Crawford finds her.

As the heat is killing her, she meets Brady Wilkins, oldest brother of three. When the coach crashes near his home, Brady offers her a place to stay for now at his ranch RosaRoja. Feeling safe with him and later his siblings (Jack and Hank), she accepts. As she comes to know his kindness and he her passion, they fall in love. However John comes for her to take her home so he can control her wealth; and the son of the previous owner of RosaRoja, insanely raging former convict Sancho Ramirez with a brutal land vendetta and his even crazier half brother Paco, arrives also as they want the family spread returned to them.

The first Blood Rose Post Civil War romance is an entertaining tale refreshed by the intermingling of the Wilkins and Ramirez families; with the additional entanglement of the British invasion. The story line is fast-paced and though somewhat by the Americana standard, Kaki Warner proves the little things matter as her lead couple is a fine pairing of seemingly opposites and the support cast is extremely strong to include Bullshot the loyal dog.

I really did love this book! It is a romance novel that is not smutty at all but is filled with passion! The characters are amazing, with so much depth that you can't help but care deeply about them, and a murderous villian that you will love to hate. It was a page turner with a great plot that held me captive. I laughed out loud and cried real tears.
Bravo to the author, Kaki Warner, she did a super job and I'm looking forward to more great books from her!

Pregnant and alone, Jessica Thornton has fled England to escape the weight of a scandalous secret. When her stagecoach crashes in the New Mexico Territory, Jessica must rely on Brady Wilkins.

Brady is a tough-as-nails rancher, as rough and tumble as they come, but behind that roughness lays a strong man full of honor. As Jessica and Brady form a strong bond, she begins to see there is more to Brady than he lets on, but each must learn to let go of their past if they are ever to have a future.

PIECES OF SKY is a brilliant Western saga! Ms. Warner is a beautiful writer whose heartfelt prose literally takes your breath away. I devoured this book from beginning to end, swept away by such realistically drawn characters, and an appreciation for the harsh splendor of the New Mexico territory.

One of the things I loved most about this book is that it is true to life during the 1860s. Ms. Warner does not sugarcoat the heartbreaking, tragic hardships that both Jessica and Brady must endure, which makes for a gripping, suspenseful read that keeps you off balance as you wonder how they will overcome all the obstacles. This is what a true Western romance saga should be. Add in a well-drawn, creepy villain, and some fabulous secondary characters, and PIECES OF SKY is a story that readers will treasure for years to come.

Brady Wilkins is a magnificent hero, and Jessica a spirited, engaging heroine. In fact, all of Ms. Warner's characters are multi-faceted and compelling, and she has a way of making you feel as if they were real. I adored taking this journey with them, and was so sorry to see the book come to a close.

I am thrilled to recommend PIECES OF SKY--this is one book that shouldn't be missed. Ms. Warner is now on my must read list. I simply cannot wait for the next book in the Blood Rose Trilogy, OPEN COUNTRY.

The H & H in this book are smart, quick-witted, and humorous, and their relationship develops over time in a way that feels real and emotionally satisfying. I liked the side characters as well, and Warner does a good job of giving individuality to what are, after all, stock romance characters (the crusty rancher, the starchy English lady). She also gives you a great sense of the setting, both in New Mexico and in England - Warner has a real gift for description. My major problem was that she includes a lot of graphic violence, which really disturbed me; while some readers have no trouble sliding over violence, or perhaps even find it exciting, I read romance to escape pain and suffering, so I'm not sure I can face another book by Warner, despite how much I enjoyed many aspects of this one.
