From the Inside Flap

Quinn moved toward the far end of the store where there were several rectangular cases housing a variety of jewels and jewelry. The more expensive pieces were in the smaller room in the back but he still liked to ease his way through each case. Just a simple cut could change the way a topaz sparkled in its setting, not as arresting as a black opal but there was a fluid beauty in the deep golden color unique to the topaz. Some nights as he watched Arianna shape metal into intricate designs, he had to clench his fists to keep from grabbing the torch and forming his own design.

Arianna was still with the customer, a middle-aged woman in spandex, and from the indecision on the woman's face, it could be awhile. Quinn decided to make his way to the studio and pour a whiskey while he waited. He didn't realize anyone was in the studio until he had his hand on the knob. That's when he saw her. Much of her face was obscured by huge goggles as she clutched a blow torch and bent over a piece of metal. He studied the long, lean frame, the black braid reaching down her back as she aimed the blow torch and a bright orange-blue flame spat out, illuminating a slice of pale skin.

The woman's slim fingers mesmerized him as she worked the torch with practiced skill, making him think of sex and lots of it. Who was she? Quinn clutched the doorknob, caught between desire to go to the woman and rip off the goggles so he could see her face and the equal need to stay right there, watching.

She leaned forward further and he could make out a swell of small breast beneath the black turtleneck sweater. They'd be round breasts, firm, full. He imagined her naked, the long waist, the slim hips . . . The woman turned off the blow torch, set it on the workbench and held up the metal she'd been soldering. His gaze fell to her lips. Full. Red. Perfect.

He turned the knob just as she disappeared behind a screened panel. What would he say when she returned? I like the way you work a blow torch? Maybe he wouldn't say anything, he'd pour a drink, no two, and go for the casual, Hi, I'm Quinn, Arianna's friend.

He waited. Three minutes, five, six. Finally, he opened the door and stepped inside, expecting the mystery woman to materialize from behind the partition. When she didn't, he edged toward the screen and looked behind it. A tiny hall snaked toward a door that led to the street. The woman was gone.

About the Author

Mary Campisi writes emotion-packed books about second chances. Whether contemporary romances, women's fiction, or Regency historicals, her books all center on belief in the beauty of that second chance.

Mary should have known she'd become a writer when at age thirteen she began changing the ending to all the books she read. It took several years and a number of jobs, including registered nurse, receptionist in a swanky hair salon, accounts payable clerk, and practice manager in an OB/GYN office, for her to rediscover writing. Enter a mouse-less computer, a floppy disk, and a dream large enough to fill a zip drive. The rest of the story lives on in every book she writes.

When she's not working on her craft or following the lives of five young adult children, Mary's digging in the dirt with her flowers and herbs, cooking, reading, walking her rescue lab mix, Cooper, or, on the perfect day, riding off into the sunset with her very own hero/husband on his Ultra Limited aka Harley.

Mary has published with Kensington, Carina Press, and The Wild Rose Press.

Pieces of You is an entertaining story, lots of subplots and the characters are intriguing. Quinn Burnes was deserted by his mother when he was only 15 years old, a particularly vulnerable time for a young boy. Because of his mother's betrayal, Quinn doesn't let any woman get to close, until he meets Evie, a woman running from an abusive husband. That's the main plot of Mary Campisi's romance novel.

While I know that romance novels aren't supposed to entertain without making you think too hard(which is why they appeal to me), I wished there were more about Quinn's mother. I never understood/sympathized with this stupid woman, who deserted her kids one day because she wanted to paint/find-herself/whatever--to the point of not even wanting her to appear on the page. When she comes back into Quinn and his sister's life, because of selfish reasons, I was even more disgusted by her. I noticed that this book is part of a trilogy which is good, because it would take a whole novel for me to even warm up to this woman.

All of that aside, Pieces of You is a very good romance novel. I loved Quinn, the perfect hero. He takes care of his father who falls apart about after his wife leaves him one day (for no reason, and here I go again . . .), and his younger sister who now suffers from panic attacks. Campisi is s very good writer and I'm hoping she writes another book with these characters so I can understand why Quinn's mother left her family.

One other thing that bugged me while reading this novel are the names. We have an Eve and an Evie, and a Anna, and an Annalise. I found that when I'd leave this book for a few days, and then pick it back up, I'd be somewhat confused as to who was who. This is the third book I've seen this in. Please authors, get a phone book, a baby book or something, and make your characters different from each other.

How can an abandoned child learn to trust and love again? Abandoned by their mother when they were 15 and 10, respectively, Quinn and Annie are very close as siblings. Outwardly, they are normal people; Quinn is a successful lawyer while Annie is a successful artist and engaged to be married to a medical doctor. But they are unfulfilled.

For 18 years, they thought their mother, Evie Burnes was dead; but out of nowhere, she comes back needing Quinn's help because someone wanted to kill her. Meanwhile, in between dealing with Annie's love life and protecting his mother from her would-be killer, Quinn also found himself getting involved with "Danielle."

She looks and acts like a battered woman but Quinn"s gut tells him that there is something more than meets the eyes about Danielle. Harder still is that Quinn finds himself very attracted to her.

Fast-paced and tightly written, the author has her grips on you for the first page. Three subplots all help to make the main plot exciting. As you discover more about each character, you want to more. And it is so tempting to read the ending. Thank goodness this is on Kindle or I would have done that. Because is I cheated and read the ending first, then I would have lost out in this beautifully told story of love, redemption and forgiveness.

This is a fast-paced story that drew me in from the beginning. It's a tale of second chances, healing, growth and forgiveness. And a little bit of suspense and bad guys thrown in. Quinn has had to carry around a lot of secrets and hurt for a long time. But when his mother comes back to town asking for his help, and a stranger on the run stumbles into his life, his world suddenly becomes very compicated but in the end, very healing.

Not the best and a lot going on for such a short book. I did, however, like the characters, but there just seemed to be something missing to make this a great story. If you're looking for a quick beach-type read, this will work.

There was a good story line, but the opportunity for suspense and page-turning thrill was not taken. In about two pages, the bad guy was gone! There should have been much more to that part of the story!

Pieces of You might be my favorite Mary Campisi story thus far! Mary builds a life for her characters, not just a storyline. I read it from cover to cover, in one sitting. I was unable to put it down. Be prepared for an exciting journey in this book. A definite must read!!

A great story, very entertaining, the characters are intriguing and there are a lot of subplots. There's a lot of twist and turns but at the end they all come together. I'm glad there are 2 more books, because I still don't understand why Quinn's mother left in the first place. She was a very selfish women in my estimation. It shows you how you can have second chances and be happy.
