Pierce is a tiger shifter and omega, a rarity. He is so valued that he's been in seclusion since he was 10. Private tutors and around the clock body guards. He had childhood friends but had never experienced life, not until he traveled with his guards to stay with Declan's wolf pack. The details are in earlier books but suffice it to say - Shannon was already a member of Declan's pack and he is a tiger shifter. So of course other tigers were welcome and the wolf pack was becoming a refuge for omega shifters.
So this is Pierce's story and his relationship with Gavin. Gavin was a childhood friend, both were first loves to each other. Fast forward to the present and Gavin is one of Pierce's guards. With time and maturity, they're finally talking and settling into a relationship. There was enough background and characterization of both main characters while a good portion of the book covered other plots. Like why the omegas are targeted. What the elder council is doing. . . Or not doing. Of course there are cameos from past favorites and a nice explanation in the beginning of the book to remind us of who is who and how they interact in this world.
I appreciated how the various couples are moving forward but they're all working together assisting Declan and the pack. I enjoyed reading about how the tigers are different than wolves and those differences pop up during meetings, pack runs, etc. -- Yet the tigers, as this story is focuses on them, love living with the wolves. They are treated as family, things are casual. And now we have three different shifter species co-existing together and working towards common goals. LOVE IT. - Dan's Wife
The tiger shifter Pierce is living with his four bodyguards (and childhood friends) on the land of Declan's pack. Pierce has been removed from his family because of safety reasons many years ago. Living in the pride's house meant no freedom for Pierce. He had not even been allowed to run outdoors with others. Now he has been accepted on the pack's land, but still with little freedom.
One of those bodyguards is Gavin, the man Pierce knows is his mate. But Gavin had run before and Pierce is not willing to take another chance on him. It will take some work to get through all those hurt feelings and it does not help that someone is leaking the security details to outsiders. I do not spoil much by telling that the reason is money - the root to all evil. This endangers Pierce's life, gets Gavin injured - and introduces the reason for Jake leaving his friends and his unrequited love for Pierce.
If you are into m/m and shape shifters, you'll enjoy this one.
As an additional comment, I find this author's steamy scenes to be among the most realistic depictions of M/M physical intimacy that I have found in the genre. (The descriptions, interactions, and the choice/building of activities ring much closer to my personal experience compared to most other M/M romances I've read). For me, this "realism" makes these stories that much more entertaining and enjoyable to read, even in a fantasy/paranormal genre.
Yes, except for the bad guys everyone else is still to good to be true but at least there is a real bad guy(s).
