"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? This author has real potential and I'l read the next book.
There's one glaring error in continuity where a Berreta morphs into a .45 with no explanation other than threat the editing is pretty much perfect.
Full disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my rating in any way.
The writing style was fantastic! It's easy to read and very realistic. The action and suspense was so well done that I struggled to put it down! There are many cases where I absolutely could not have guessed what was coming next. On page 77, I actually said out loud "Wait what?!" And had to re-read that paragraph because I couldn't believe it.
The pacing and the plot were both excellent! I loved that while the main focus was on crime and suspense, there were also elements of love, marriage and second chances, which I am a total sucker for!
Needless to say, I was totally engrossed in this story!
I loved all of the characters, even the "bad" ones. I really enjoyed how we were introduced to all of them, and how their storylines met up with one another. I cannot wait to (hopefully) see some of them in book two!
I would definitely recommend picking this one up if you like crime thrillers! I loved every second of it. I'm so excited to get my hands on the other two books in this trilogy.
Pigeon-Blood Red is the first book in a trilogy following three main characters, but mainly Rico, the hitman. There were a number of characters introduced throughout the book, some of the time, the way they were introduced confused me slightly, however, it became clear as the time went on.
The characters were well written and multi-dimensional. I enjoyed seeing the main character, Rico, grow and change throughout the story as he developed feelings for a woman and decided to protect her, no matter the cost.
The love story was not a big part of the whole story, which was refreshing. It was there on the side as an added extra, but did not take over the story.
As a lover of crime stories, I did enjoy this one. It was a short book of only 250 pages, but it got to the point and I didn't find myself getting bored. As I mentioned previously, there were sections in which I was a bit confused about characters as they were being introduced out of nowhere, and you may find this too.. all I can say is persevere and it will all make sense to you.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a quick read, with a bit of action and characters who are relatable.
Thank you again to Ed for sending me a copy of this book. I really did enjoy it.
Rico follows Robert to Honolulu where Robert has met up with his wife and his mistress who are vacationing together. Sticky, right? When Rico attempts to bring Robert to justice and bring home the necklace, some "innocents" get in the way. As Rico attempts to pursue his next victims, secrets, lies & revelations come out. What will Rico do? Does he have a conscious?
Rico is a no-nonsense enforcer who is likable in the way that he does not take crap, does not back down, and is comfortable in his own skin. He is okay with what he does and makes no excuses for himself, yet at the same time, he does have a conscious. Robert is a cheating, lying, failing businessman who is willing to do whatever it takes to save his own skin. Evelyn and Paul were likable but I felt their characters could have been flushed out a little more. I figured out Rachel's angle right away.
I wish this would have been cat and mouse, more suspense, more thrilling. This was pretty straightforward crime/gangster book.
I received a copy of this book from Book Publicity Services in exchange for an honest review.
