Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. A spunky potbellied pig is the star of four separate but related stories. In the title episode, Harriet, who has always wanted to fly, gets her chance when she's awarded the part of the fairy in the school play. With the help of special stage wires, she finds herself living her dream as she soars across the stage, sprinkling sparkling fairy dust on the cheering crowd. In other adventures, Harriet helps her friend Penny Porcupine overcome her fear of heights; accepts a challenge from champion swimmer Lucy Goosey to compete in a swim contest; and drives Homer Mouse crazy with her helpfulness after he saves her life. In every story, Harriet refuses to give up, even when the odds are stacked against her. Tryon brings the whole cast of likable characters to life with warm, expressive, black-and-white illustrations. With a more difficult vocabulary than is usual in a beginning chapter book, this will be a good choice for new readers ready for more challenge.
