I will never get over the delight, the amazement, the emotion, the tears of that first reading. I am not a very religious person, but this book brings me to an understanding of what religion can mean to people.
I am so thankful that this of all Ms, Goudge's books is available on Kindle since I cannot access my beloved hardcover version at this moment, heading into the holiday season of 2013. Thank you a thousand thousand times to those who made this possible.
I wish I lived in its pages and felt about any place the way that its family feels about the inn. . . .In the mean time, I can at least read the book, allowed to participate in its life from a distance.
Every now and then an author comes along who has such a strong sense of place and such a power of conveying it that I feel almost as though I can hear the family calling to each other. Elizabeth Goudge is such an author. In less masterful hands, a book like this would be trite and twee. The plot, what there is of it, is utterly predictable. But that doesn't matter either. This book is, simply, gorgeous.
A stay at the Herb of Grace will take you back to a time when life was less hectic and stressed. Warning, if you like a fast-paced, "modern" piece of fiction, don't book a stay here, If you want an excellent, healing read, this is the place to spend some time.
Goudge loves all her characters, whether they abound in virtue or lack it sadly. Singleness of mind is a recurrent theme. The story is about rebuilding a family. The publication on Kindle is well produced.
