Pillars of Eternity, the ultimate role-playing experience on PC, comes to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, this fall! Created by and for role-playing fans by Obsidian Entertainment, masters of the RPG genre, Pillars started as a Kickstarter project, where it shattered all funding goals and pulled in more than 75,000 backers. From there, it released to broad critical acclaim, won dozens of awards, and has been a fan favorite on the PC. Now, Paradox Arctic, in partnership with 505 Games, is bringing Pillars' fantastical world, tactical combat, and unforgettable story to fans on a whole new platform. Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition includes all previously released additional content from the PC version, including all DLC and expansions in a single package.

Is the PS4 version of the game worth getting? The short answer is: YES.
However, it is far from perfect.
First off, why would you want to get this for the PS4? There are actually a number of reasons. This is the COMPLETE edition, it includes both DLCs (The White March Parts I & II) on disk. Secondly, if you are not into playing games on a personal computer, this is the only way you can go. Thirdly, and most importantly, this game is very fun! It is also "old-school" which means it is NOT easy. You have to think. You have to read. You will experience a true "role-playing" game, where you become part of a group of people on an epic journey. The story, is superb.
Although there is a lot of action/fighting in this game, this is not an action RPG. This is a real-time tactical RPG, although you can (and absolutely must) pause battles in order to give commands to your characters. The perspective is a fixed isometric game-world, with beautiful two-dimensional backdrops. You explore the areas and as you do so, uncover quests, tasks (which are akin to simple quests), speak with characters, fight enemies, and on the higher difficulties, most likely die (quite often in fact). This game does not hold your hand.
The per-rendered backdrops are gorgeous! Unfortunately, your characters are a bit on the ugly side. Still, this is certainly not a game you get for the sexy graphics. That said, I personally love the look of an isometric game, and the detail to everything from the flowers, the flying butterflies, the water, is lovingly rendered. Do not expect any cutscenes! At certain times in the game, you will make decisions but instead of seeing a cutscene, it's more like an illustrated book. This may sound awkward, but in truth it works very well.
Some great voice acting. Although the voice acting is limited. I wish it was fully voiced, but for whatever reasons (money perhaps?) the game is not. Still, your characters often speak. Other important game characters have some voice acting as well. Apart from that, the music is superb! The composer, Justin Bell, did a fabulous job! The music oscillates between relaxing (out in the fields), busy (in the city), and intense (battles). The official soundtrack has 26 tracks, and is so beautiful that I could not help myself and had to purchase the soundtrack (you can get it on amazon for $8.99 :)
I have never seen a modern game that takes so long to load! Why this is the case, I do not know. However, the publishers (Obsidian and Paradox Entertainment) should be ASHAMED of themselves! Along with other glitches such as flickers, sound effects sometimes not working, and similar (but NOT game-breaking) bugs, this is really not acceptable in today's standards. Most of the bugs I could easily live with, but the LOAD TIMES... you may literally have to wait a minute for the game to load. Now, you may think "big deal, it's just one minute!" Ah, but that is where you are mistaken! When you start the game, you get the load screen. When you enter a building (any building), you get the load screen. When you enter a new environment, you get the load screen. When you load a game, obviously you get the load screen. Care to calculate how much of your life you will be watching the load screen? NOT ACCEPTABLE, terrible job Obsidian/Paradox.
Yet, I still recommend the game, because the writing is just so strong and the game itself is truly fun. However, because of the load screen in particular, and other glitches, I took off a whole star in my rating.
This is the ONLY DRM-FREE copy of Pillars available today! Every other version has some DRM. The kickstarter edition had a DRM-free main campaign. However, the DLCs (White March) are tied to specific accounts. Which is disappointingly a form of DRM. Fortunately, here we have the complete game, along with the DLCs, all on disk! Let me summarize:
+++SUPERB story! True RPG goodness! So much detail it's scary...
+++Beautiful isometric gameplay! Really different than any other RPG out there today.
+++COMPLETE GAME! Everything is on disk, this is the ONLY complete DRM-free edition.
+++Challenging! You can vary the difficulty from easy, to rear-destroying. Personally, I play the latter, and it is HARD, no hand-holding.
+++Choices -you will make choices for better or worse. It's nice that you can play how you want to play!
+++Your party members have unique personalities and quests. This is nicer than just create your characters and whatever (although you can do that too)!
+++MUSIC = WIN
-----LOAD TIME = WHAT THE HECK?!
(A few other small glitches, but forgivable, except for the load time)
Bottom Lines: This is one of the most interesting and truly great RPGs to come out in years (my opinion of course). The rather poor port is detrimental. Still, if you are a fan of RPGs then you really have to get this. The load times do NOT ruin the game, it's still one of the most fun RPG experiences. However, it is detrimental, and if you do get this game (otherwise highly highly recommended) please send an email to Obsidian and Paradox expressing your frustration at the terrible load times.
