This pen writes like a dream for a steel tipped 15 dollar pen, then add to that an ink converter and you've got it made.
To use the converter:
1. open up the pen
2. attach converter
3. dip pen into bottle of ink up to pen's grip
4. squeeze converter and let slowly refill
5. repeat step 4 two to three times
6. replace end of pen (covering the converter)
7. wipe extra ink off of the grip
8. enjoy the fun of using a custom colored wonderful fountain pen
For a point of reference[...] you can save a vast amount of money using a converter and bottle of ink vs buying individual pens/cartridges. So save some money and buy a bottle of Noodler's ink to go with your new pen. Noodler's Baystate Blue, Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin, or Diamine Onyx Black are all wonderful inks (Noodler's caries something like 114+ different colors. The included converter holds twice as much ink as an international standard converter and it comes with the pen at no additional charge. Wicked Awesome pen, great deal.
Enjoy this pen, I know I have.
Caveats: any F nib will be "scratchy" compared to a quality broad or italic nib. The quality construction also means it is heavier than similar sized pensn this can be a pro or a con depending on your taste.
Con: uses proprietary cartridges and converters. The cartridge is the real limitation since it limits the variety of ink available to you. The converter issue is more of a pet peeve of mine (I like standardized components)
If this is your first pen, go for a fine nib. A medium nib is what turns most people off of fountain pens when they haven't yet learned to appreciate ink.
It comes with a converter and ink, which is a generic black, and the con-20 converter is a solid, reliable little workhorse, but if you write a lot, buy a con-50 as an upgrade that holds more ink. I like the 20 since I change colors often, but I can still write 15 dense pages with the 20 before refilling.
Since this pen comes with a converter, I'd suggest picking up a bottle of ink to go with it. Even with a fine nib, some shading can happen since this is a lovely wet writer, and for daily writing I am a HUGE fan of Noodler's "Black Swan in Australian Roses" which has a black component that is completely waterproof/tamper proof, so even if someone tries to wash it away with water or bleach, the black in it is impervious and your documents remain legible. It also has gorgeous shading and is a lovely red wine color.
Overall, I think this pen is one of the two best beginner fountain pens out there in particular due to the outstanding nibs. If you REALLY like a fine line, go for the unnamed "pilot fountain pen" that costs about $5, which does come with a massive ink cartridge and EXTRA fine yet still crystal clear and only a touch toothy nib. I may actually switch the EF nib from one of those onto this metro.
If you want writing to just feel special, just get one of these and have fun. But I also suggest spending $10 or so on a bottle of ink that shades really nicely and takes advantage of the feeling of writing with watercolors.
