Piece of Garbage

Piece of Garbage
This is a horrible product. We purchased it for the trip we are on now. We had crossbars installed professionally by Ford. We packed it properly and took procautions by wrapping each piece in a garbage bag to prevent leaking just in case as it was raining. The straps were awful. My husband did not trust them and used industrial twist ties to reinforce. Thank God he did as 5 hours into the trip the side completely ripped and the plastic started pealing off like tiles on the space shuttle on re-entry to Earth. We checked it over three times at each stop. The straps needed to be tightened at each stop. We were overly cautious because we were not confident in the product. Lo and behold we had to pull over on the side of the freeway and unload the bag and cram it into my Ford Explorer with my two golden retrievers. I am sending this product back expecting a full refund.

Old saying: "you get what you pay for ". This is an economy rooftop luggage bag that only costs 70 bucks.
I've traveled with this for 1500 miles so far, mostly freeway, and in a little rain. There have been no problems with it. The tie down straps could be better.
This is a pretty large bag and MUST be FULL. If it is not full, any looseness will flap in the wind and (duh) will obviously tear. I put this on an anti-slip mat and used 2 extra 1 inch straps. It was packed full and I put blankets and pillows in any voids.
If you do not have a lot of luggage, I would suggest getting a smaller bag.

I purchased this waterproof, areodynamic, extra durable, cargo carrier to take on a trip to the beach. I tried it out the night before we left. While I was putting it on top of the SUV, the bottom stitching tore even before I could get it strapped on. I fixed it with duct tape and since it was on the bottom, i didn't think it would cause a problem. I decided to throw a bag in there and keep overnight to see if it was even waterproof. Glad I did, the rain came that night and the next morning, everything was wet and already had that lovely smell of wet clothes. SO, I had to wrap all of our luggage in plastic bags before we left. On the way down there, the tope left of the bag (that's all it is) starting tearing on teh top seams. More and more duct tape, and several straps that were added off teh side of the highway. Just enough to keep it together. The trip back was even more duct tape, even more straps, and the end result was something that resembled a tattered garbage bag. $200+ of the most wasted money I have ever spent.

I used it to move from Washington State to Colorado State and then from Colorado went on vacation to Arkansas and back... never had any issues. I will say this, however, the straps that come with it arent' exactly the most secure, so I would highly recommend using some small ratchet straps to hold it all down... I used two small ones and crossed them over it.

We purchased this for a trip from PA to CA and back a few years later. We used it on top of our car each trip. It made it through rain on both trips and snow one way - no problems. Nothing got wet on the inside. We had it packed to the max with clothes, towels and other items - everything was dry. We only used the straps it came with and they worked great. The only issue we had was starting out we did not realize the zippers need to be fastened together. We started on the turnpike only to have someone beeping and pointing to our top. We pulled over and saw the zippers had pulled apart from each other and some of our stuff was falling out. Quick fix - we just put a keychain through each zipper to keep it closed - you're probably supposed to use a lock to secure it and keep people out if you have to stop. This was not a design flaw, the zippers stayed attached to the bag - just pulled open from each other I guess due to all the wind. It folded up nice in between trips, no tears. We look forward to using it again on the next road trip.

I bought this cargo carrier for a family vacation to South Dakota. I was impressed both by the capacity of the carrier and its ease in attaching to our vehicle. The material the carrier is constructed from is heavy-duty and weather resistant. HOWEVER, before we made it back from our vacation (apx. 1300 miles round trip) the carrier had burst a seam causing an opening in the seam of about 24 inches. Fortunately, we discovered this before we lost any of our luggage and were able to make it home by purchasing a rope and lashing the opening closed. Good product, but needs better seams.

Pros: space, and lots of it. Water-tight as long as you pay attention to let the folds drop over the zipper as their design was intended. Made of high quality materials (it should last a long time, even exposed to the sun for extended duration). Sturdy material, although it IS NOT RIGID. Great Price performance ratio so long as you avoid the CON below.

Cons: (I took 1 star from my review of an other wise awesome product for this alone!) The strapping design/implementation is extremely SUB PAR. The clips are plastic, and their angle of attack for mounting requires you have front and rear bars to strap it to. If you use the built in straps you risk basic wind/vibration/shock easily loosening the straps. The manual even recognizes the issue and states plainly that over tightening may cause the clasp to break. Serious design error. Accept that the straps are useless and buy a $10 set of ratcheting straps and you will be MUCH happier.

Other Thoughts: I have a 3rd Gen 4Runner with the roof rack. This bag extends nearly a foot beyond the rack both front and rear! Tighten the unit down until it is tight all around to prevent flapping noise (no brainer!)

This actually held up really well for the first 8 days of a 10-day road trip from Wisconsin to Montana and back, but on the last day it fell apart (actually may have fallen apart the day before but we didn't know it) and we lost some nice blankets on the freeway in North Dakota. The straps seemed to hold well (tied to front and back), we chose not to tie everything on with extra straps and it seemed to work well. It held a lot of gear, 3 sleeping bags, a 6-man tent, two clothing bags and lots of miscellaneous things, and still would have had room for a bit more. We travelled at speeds up to 75 miles per hour but it was nice weather and no rain until the last day when it fell apart! Too bad - we were loving it for the majority of the trip. Luckilly we had some straps along and tied everything down to get our stuff home. I would not recommend this for someone planning a long interstate trip, but it might be OK for a shorter trip now and then. Returning for refund (thankfully we ordered it just before we left on our trip!).
