You can see from the picture I use mine until they ink is no more! They get a great work out from me because of my profession and I've not had one fail me or my expectations yet.
However, they smudge terribly! I might not be using the correct term -- what happens is that when writing, the ink line is very non-uniform, as if it leaks, and it looks bad. I'm not referring to inadvertently contacting the still-wet ink with my hand or sleeve, and having the ink blur (that would not be the pen's fault). This happens even if the tip is carefully cleaned, it is not a matter of gunk building up. I've experienced this with multiple pens over multiple boxes, for a long time ... next box will still be Pilot brand, but I'll try a better model.
*** Update ***
After having used these now for a few weeks have to say that comparing these with the Gel Pens used previously the previous statement is true. However there is a difference in the readability, the Pilot Gel pens are darker and easier to read, will probably switch back, My eyes aren't the greatest any more and the darker ink is easier to read.
