The Pilot Direct Air Jacket, A New Standard in Quality and Afordability

Pilot has been designing and building race ready motorcycle apparel since 1995. Now they're brining their technical know-how, and design expertise to the streets with their new line of everyday riding apparel.

Exterior Construction

The outer shell of the Direct Air jacket is made up of ultra strong Pilotex 210D Micro Mesh. Unlike older or cheaper mesh materials, Pilotex Mesh has a finer, multi-layer perforation that flows just as much air, but due to a tighter weave offers increased abrasion/puncture resistance. For further protection 600D NPF overlay panels cover the shoulders and elbows with triple and double stitched seams throughout.

Interior Construction

The inner shell features a zip-out removable waterproof/windproof liner that will keep the rider warm and dry when the weather turns. Soft touch mesh fabric lines the inside and all armor pockets are backed with soft fabric for added comfort while moving about the bike.

CE Approved Micro Cellular Armor

CE Approved Micro Cellular Armor

Removable CE Level 2 armor is in place on both the shoulders and elbows of the jacket. Micro cellular armor is designed to absorb and disperse impact as opposed to traditional hard armor which transfers much of the force to the wearer.

Neoprene Collar

Rolled Neoprene Collar

The collar of the Direct Air jacket is made of thick rolled neoprene. The soft surface prevents chaffing during repeated lane check head movements, and the squishy nature of neoprene prevents the collar from stabbing or pinching the rider.

RedTab Visibility System

Pilot's Red Tab system is in use throughout the jacket. All crucial pockets and attachment points are highlighted in red accents for increased visibility in low light conditions.

Visibility, Both Day and Night

Reflective 3M Scotchlite strips on the chest, arms, and back allow for 360° reflective action while riding at night. During the day the Hi-Vis color option helps make the rider more visible to less focused drivers.

I first ordered a size L (runs a tad small in my opinion), and needed a size XL. I sent it back in order to exchange it for a size XL. Unfortunately the XL was mis-labeled sometime during manufacturing and I was actually sent another L. I called and spoke to Collin. He 2 day priority shipped me a size XL (for real this time) before I had even returned the mis-labeled jacket in my possession and I was able to go riding on the weekend! I've been riding motorcycles for over 10 years and have owned many different jackets. The jacket itself is of excellent quality. It fits great, and has all of the protection and adjustability that you could want, and in my opinion for about 60% of the price of the competition! The quality is way better then say a Cycle Gear Bilt jacket of something along those lines. It's more on par with a touratech, alpinestars, firstgear, etc...Great jacket, fantastic customer service, what more could you want? I would suggest Google searching for their other "Trans Urban" jacket and you will see a nice review from webbikeworld.

Things I like:
1. It has waist adjustment and multiple arm adjustments. Everyone is shaped slightly different and this means you can get a custom fit so you won't be flapping in the wind.
2. The airflow (with the liner removed) is great. I feel it the most on my upper arms and armpits. You can still feel it all over the jacket. It should be good for much hotter riding (90-100 deg F.)
3. The quality is great and I imagine this thing lasting for a long time.
4. The safety features are perfect. The material feels sturdy; the reflective piping is a nice touch for night visibility, and the armor feels like it is protective, but without being too uncomfortable.

Not sure why they used such heavy, solid rubber padding, but I know there are plenty of lighter materials that would be as safe or safer.

Great design, plenty of adjustments for a custom fit. If the padding was lighter and the jacket itself was a little lighter, I would have given it 5 stars.

Probably great for temps 85 or lower. Even with the meshing, I can see it getting pretty toasty over 85. Also, to keep things in context, I'm talking about of DC humidity temps.

*Update*
After riding in today's sunny, 91deg (60% humidity) weather, I have to assume this jacket will easily keep you cool into the mid 90s even with the muggy DC humidity (this is with padding installed and without liner).

It's consistently mid to upper 90s/low 100s from June till October here in northern Sacramento Valley. I have been riding for years in t-shirts but decided to quit depending on my luck. I tried several jackets and settled on the Joe Rocket Phoenix 5.0 which is the same price as this one.

I really wanted to keep the Pilot Motosport Direct Air jacket but it has much less airflow with a finer mesh than the Joe Rocket, too hot for high 80s and 90s and I tested it thoroughly. If it were high 70s to low 80s in my area I would probably get the Pilot, it is much heavier and more durable, taped waterproof seams in the plastic liner, lots of pocket features, feels like an excellent value for the money, it's very nicely done and a perfect light touring or commuting jacket. I am 5'9" 168lbs, athletic trim with slight belly, my usual size is medium and the medium fit me perfectly.

I wanted to keep this for cooler weather riding but it is of limited value for that so I decided to get a straight up touring style jacket, looked at the Pilot Trans Urban for $225 but ultimately got the Viking Enforcer for $99 and couldn't be happier with the value and functionality of it. I put reviews on that and the Joe Rocket pages.

This jacket is exactly what I was looking for, it gives me lot's of flexibility on my arms unlike the other jacket I've been wearing (it hashard armor). I just hope it will be effective at protecting me well enough if I ever need it. The main reason for this review is so that I could talk about the sizing.

I usually wear large on all my clothing. I bought an XL on this jacket and it fits good, although I believe a large would have also been a good tight fit. I have added a few pictures for you to judge. I'm 5'10" and 198 lbs.

I expected it to be smaller (therefore I ordered XL instead of L) but it still does the job as far as protection, so this one is a keeper.

I bought this jacket for a ride from Houston to Colorado in July. The weather in Houston was mid-90's and it was 105-ish in West Texas. I wore this jacket with only a wicking shirt (for running) underneath. When I was moving there was enough circulation to be comfortable. I wear a 43 regular in a suit jacket - this fit well with a real shirt underneath (when I got to Colorado) but was snug with a polar fleece.I would have to go up a size if I wanted to be able to wear this when it is cold. I never put in the rain liner - I just got wet and dried back out. Pockets are in all the correct places if you are right handed. Build quality is excellent.

DISCLAIMER: This is lengthy, but should be read if you are counting on this jacket taking care of you in a wreck.
I originally gave this jacket 4 stars, stating I'd given it 5 if it had the chest protector as indicated in the video (that's another $50-60 product). Then I had a wreck (deer t-boned me resulting in being dragged 40 feet with jacket on). Initially, I thought the jacket performed well and reviewed as such - a company rep posted to contact them for discount. As I'm recovering, I realize the significant road rash and punctures to my arms, forearms and elbows were due to the jacket's faulty design..THE PADS MOVED AROUND INSIDE THE LINING. See, I thought they tore loose..but they simply WERE NOT ATTACHED ONLY INSERTED in the lining. If anything my wounds are worse due to the amount of embedded jacket material. So - I contacted the rep and expressed my concerns - that was a week or two ago - no response. (09/17/15 UPDATE: Got an email from the rep - told me they never got message and wants to work things out - I'm grateful, but lesson learned: stick to buying items from Amazon - shy away from Motosports, etc)
While I'm certainly not claiming the jacket should have protected from everything, I am suggesting the padding is worthless if it slides around when it makes contact. By the way - Amazon has been great. Pilot..not so much. Buyer beware.
