The pen is every bit as nice and well built as I have read. Certainly looks like a $200+ fountain pen. The con 70 converter (bought separately) is a little marvel of old engineering.
My one disappointment is the pen was NOT "smooth as butter" out of the box. The nib had more "feedback" that I prefer and was a bit dry.
I understand this happens to be a somewhat common issue and I hope to be able to correct it with some nib tweaking. I don't want a stubborn nib to ruin this otherwise stunning pen.
Follow up 12/12/2017: I decided to contact PILOT USA to assess the pen. Their customer service was exceptional. Under warranty, they replaced the nib, cleaned the pen and turnaround was about 2 weeks. The pen now is one of my best writers and is now performing as I would have expected from the start. Kudos to Pilot USA for their service which now makes this one of my favorites, particularly for the price from Japan.
The transparent pen helps you see your ink level, but when paired with a CON-70 you don't have to check very often because that converter holds just over 1ml of ink! The ability of Pilot Custom pens to take the CON-70 converter edges it above Sailor and Platinum pens at the same price point: you can write longer between refills.
There are smoke colored translucent plastic parts of the pen: the ends and the cap liner... Some criticize this, but I feel it gives it an even sleeker, cooler look than if it had been 100% transparent.
I got mine with an M nib and it wrote perfectly out of the box. Some Pilot fountain pens arrive writing too dry, but this can easily be fixed by gently flossing the nib with brass shims. (Research this on YouTube before trying this!) In this case the M nib was flawless. The M nib is a little too wide for writing on the cheapest paper, but that extra width makes it an even smoother writing experience. It's a perfect nib for quality paper such as Rhodia, Black 'n Red notebooks, or "HP Premium Choice Laserjet Paper".
Bottom line -- I love this pen as much as I love all the other pens in the Pilot Custom & Custom Heritage series.
NOTE: My photo shows blackened lettering on the cap band but I did that myself using Mars Black acrylic paint. The stock pen does not have blackened lettering.
This is my favorite of the bunch. Here's why:
-Nib: I love Pilot's M nib. It's the perfect size for me. It's also a very big and pretty nib and is a SMOOTH writer.
-Aesthetics: I like demonstrater pens because it gives the pen an unexpected and unique look.
-Ink Capacity: This Pilot pen can take the Con 70 converter, which holds much more than the Con 50, which I'm not a huge fan of.
All in all, a very classic pen that has a great nib and is a workhorse of a pem. Love it!
I inked it up as soon as I received it and it wrote so smooth right off the bat! I ordered a converter ($10) for it from JP which will be here tomorrow.
I really like this pen. It’s lightweight but not cheap feeling. I haven’t met a pilot fountain pen that I didn’t like. This is a great price for a fantastic pen!
