highlighters and now markers are part of Pilot Japan's amazing FriXion line. These erasable markers write in vibrant colors yet erase wonderfully through heat created from friction. Just rub the rubber end over the ink to make it transparent, and you can write on the same area again and again! Interestingly enough, the ink in these pens will actually reappear when the temperature reaches below -10 C (under 14 Fahrenheit). A freezer is sufficiently cold enough to make the ink start to reappear, you can watch a video on how it works here. It is like a magic pen for adults!Because the ink in this pen is thermo sensitive, we do not advise for it to be left in hot cars, used for mailing, or subjected to a condition that exposes it to a lot of friction. The video below demonstrates how well these pens erase:

You can erase the marker, but the pressure required to fully erase it actually warped the paper. I thought to myself that I would just erase the marker ink with the hairdryer. (It wouldn't help with the precision that I'd hoped to get from the eraser, but that's okay.) I hit it with the hairdryer, and it disappeared--sort of. I'm attaching a picture of the paper once it was erased. You can still see the color names I wrote and the hearts I drew. The pinks and oranges seem to leave behind the most residual color.
I had planned to use these to color code my planner. I was also going to let the 3 year old give them a go since they will easily be removed from walls, doors, and whatever else she decides to "make pretty." Because of these results, my plans have changed. If you want them for an adult coloring book or something of that nature, they're perfect. For my needs, they only get three stars.
The FriXion highlighters and gel pens are coming in the mail next week. I'll post a comparison as soon as I can.
These are amazing!! I honestly didn't think these would work or that they would leave behind smeared color on the paper, I was proven wrong, these work amazing!! You get 24 different colors and they do in fact erase. I sat there showing my husband over and over lol. I was like "these are actual markers....and they erase" HAHA!! The one downside is that these came loose without any packaging. They come wrapped in bubble wrap with tape around it. Other people said all their markers came loose in a box so I think it depends which seller is selling them. I didn't mind though as I usually store my pens in a container.
If you are a younger kiddo or you like carrying your pens in some sort of closed container then I suggest buying a pretty pencil case with a zipper and putting these in there so you can bring them with you. They have these great zippered pen holders on JetPens that actually convert into a little pencil cup holder thing. Its made of soft material too so its easy to carry around. If you have been debating on getting these pens, don't, just get them :-).
But this is absolutely "marker" ink- the same consistency and qualities of other water-based markers. The colors are super bright and vivid, and they erase VERY cleanly with either friction via the attached eraser or heat.
The tip of the marker is fairly fine, but not for writing in small spaces. I use these pens to mark my planner, make little sketches on artwork before I commit to final versions over them with paint (then I can simply use my heat gun to "erase" the Frixion sketch below) and to practice lettering. The fact I can use a heat gun to erase this ink from any surface makes these markers invaluable to me.
I highly recommend them- they are well worth the price.
The packaging left a little to be desired. There IS NO packaging. Mine came wrapped in plastic, but I organize my pens in small containers so I didn't really mind, but if you are looking for a plastic case or something that they can stay in, this set doesn't come with that.
I love writing with these, but the tips are very marker like, so writing in small spaces would be difficult. I use mine in my planner to make bold notes, to color or decorate or to highlight something I want to remember. Not really for writing, more for coloring or accents.
I have had no bleed through, even on the recycled paper I am using that is uber thin. I mean, occaisonally you can see a little, but not enough to make these a deal breaker. They DO erase easily but you have to wait for them to dry completely before attempting to erase or you run the risk of tearing your paper - frixion (friction) doesn't exactly work on a wet surface. So keep that in mind.
If you have any questions, just ask but I totally recommend these as a fun way to add some color to your note taking, planner, calendar or journals.
