The Invention of Dr. Grip Writing Instruments
Based on a common need for a more comfortable writing instrument, Pilot set out to give people the writing solution they were looking for. In 1995, Pilot launched Dr. Grip, a pen and mechanical pencil collection designed to provide superior writing comfort and be the solution to that demand. By 1996, the entire Dr. Grip line earned the Ease-of-Use Commendation by the Arthritis Foundation. More recently in 2012, a three-month study conducted by the Georgia Tech Research Institute found Dr. Grip Center of Gravity (COG) surpassed key competitors in overall comfort ratings for users both with and without arthritis. In the study, Dr. Grip COG was proven to be almost 2X more comfortable than key competitor brands*.
Dr. Grip is Offered in an Array of Point Types and Barrel Colors
Dr. Grip's classic line has been enhanced over the years with the introduction of a wide variety of barrel colors and styles. The collection includes both fashion-forward and professional styles for a variety of writing needs and occasions. Dr. Grip is available in barrel colors that range from fun neon colors, to sophisticated metallic hues, to professional blue, black, and silver. In addition, Dr. Grip is offered in a variety of point types including Medium 1.0 mm ball point ink, Fine 0.7 mm gel ink, and #2 HB mechanical pencil lead. Every Dr. Grip pen and mechanical pencil is retractable and refillable for continued use and lasting value.
Introducing the Dr. Grip 4+1 Multi-function Writing Instrument

Also, this product was approved by the arthritis association, this is the reason I purchased this in the first place. I don't have permanent arthritis in my hands but do occasionally get RA flare-ups. When I am in pain, this is my go-to pencil...the width of the grip is not too small like a regular wooden pencil and not too fat like some of the other Dr. Grip pencils....it is perfect. If you have problems with stiff hands, or arthritis or even RA I would recommend at least trying this pencil out to see if it can make writing more comfortable.
I now own about 10 of these pencils. At $8 apiece that is nuts, I know. I am not giving it five stars because the eraser is too small and non-standard so you can't find replacements easily, and it is too expensive. Since I prefer to write in pencil rather than pen, this is my only real choice, until someone comes out with a better one.
I have tried them all, bic makes a great pencil for the money but this one is much better to write with.
Here's to writing and drawing without the pain!
There is, however, something I can say for the company, Pilot. Apparently, the "clicker" button wasn't completely twisted on at the factory, so it fell off, never to be seen again. Rather than returning the pencil to Amazon, I called Pilot using a number I found online. I was greeted politely, and a replacement was immediately in the mail. As any idiot can install it, this idiot did just that. Now, I regularly give a little "twist-check" -- no problems since.
The grip is just right, and the weight is unique and very comfortable.
I used to be a die-hard 0.5mm user, but the feel of this pencil is so good, I've switched to 0.7mm.
If this came in 0.5, I'd be an even happier customer!
The main cons (that may translate for other users) hinge on as downsides to some of the good qualities.
1. Writing or drawing with this pencil is like riding in an Oldsmabuick with shot suspension. It's a smooth drive with crummy responsiveness (at least, for me).
2. The padded barrel effect is a little too much for me in terms of prolonged use. I suspect that it is something I could get use to, but in the meantime, I find myself constantly putting it down.
