I prefer the V7 to the thinner tip of the V5; the V7 produces a bold line, and I think that the V5 is a bit TOO precise (the written line is too thin), and a bit scratchy to my ears as well.
These pens flow very easily and are comfortable to hold. The ink goes on very thick, but does not run; it looks great on the page. The design is simple and classic.
Amazon generally has a better price than the local office stores, but do your comparison shopping.
The only warning I have is that once you try this pen you may not be able to like any other!
I've also used the V7 retractable and they're also excellent pens, about 80% as good as the V7 traditional.
I shudder to think of these being discontinued...best pen ever.
While the needle tip makes them stand out from other pens, it is this feature that actually caused me to stop using them. Unlike standard ballpoint or gel roller tips which are very difficult to break, the needle tip can bend or snap causing ink to leak. The back of the box even has a warning that changes in air pressure can cause leaks. Issues are rather rare, but if these do become your go to pens - you will probably run into one of these problems at some point.
The reason the V7 earns 4 stars because it smears noticeably more than the V5 (Extra Fine). The V7 feels slightly more smooth to write with, but because it lays down more ink, it smears more and it leaves dots of ink and the end of letters, or slowly drawn lines. Keep in mind that pens with a more fine tip feel scratchier to write with. If you want your pen to truly glide, choose an even larger tip - like the Pilot Precise Grip Bold. Just remember that the extra ink takes longer to dry and can muddy your handwriting if the ink spreads/bleeds on cheaper paper..
- Clear window allows you to see when the pen is running low on ink
- Feels smoother to write with versus the Pilot Precise V5 (Extra Fine)
- Does not require much pressure to write with.Read more ›
Update on March 27th: I returned these pens to Amazon and bought a dozen at my local Staples. They have the same problem!! They are already running out of ink.

Love these pens, they write smooth and if you store them so the cap is facing down you shouldn't have any problems with ink flow.Published 26 days ago by Kevin
I've been using these pens for more than 10 years. By far, they are my favorite pens, specifically, the V7 Fine (not extra fine). Read morePublished 1 month ago by Craig
