The Fall 2010 season has been a rather disappointing time for television. Returning shows that were once hits have lost their luster, most new shows are duds and/or retreads, and some have already been canceled, moved, or otherwise.

Then Terriers showed up out of nowhere. With an advertising campaign that could be called skittish at best, the commercials gave very little insight to what the show was about. I tuned in both as a Donal Logue fan and because FX has proved to be a safe haven from the same-old trash I'm used to finding on network television.

The show centers around would-be private eyes Hank Dolworth (Donal Logue) and Britt Pollack (Michael Raymond-James...from True Blood). They quickly stumble into a case over their heads, having to deal with local corruption, the police force, and the town's everyman. We also see snippets of the home lives of the two heroes. Hank still pines for his ex-wife Gretchen (who's also remarrying), while Britt lives with his beautiful girlfriend Katie, each with their own secrets. The cast melds well and there is a great deal of chemistry among all the characters.

The way the show deftly handles episodic content and a more serialized arc calls back to the first season of Veronica Mars. It would be possible to jump in at a random episode since they play a "previously on Terriers" bit at the start, but anybody remotely interested in the show should definitely watch these in order.

Six episodes in, I can safely say that Terriers is not only the best new show of the season, but quite possibly the best show currently airing. Smart, funny, dramatic, well acted, and never boring throughout the hour long length. The genre blending is fantastic without resulting in harsh changes in tone.

For all the crappy shows out there that get lavish box sets, where is the DVD for this fine show?

The writing is just complicated enough to intrigue the intelligent viewer; the acting is wrenching at times, dastardly humorous at others. It's tragicomedy at its finest, with a dash of mystery and conspiracy.

It had the worst promotion ever, and the title didn't do it any favors. If you liked Veronica Mars, Life, Firefly, The Shield, Justified, or Six Feet Under, or any other quirky show, try this one.

It's hard to characterize this captivating show. If you like shows with great characters, watch it. Sly humor? Watch it. Action? Watch it. Sexy people? Yep. Originality? You got it. Also funky intro/ending music (too little of it) and first-rate acting. I haven't seen something this good in a long time. Thank you FX.

When I first saw Terriers, it was just the next suggestion because of something else I'd watched. So I clicked and sat happpily through the trials and tribulations playing out in the first episode. There are many things I love about this show. First and foremost are the two actors who bring life in the most charming way to the main characters; so different, and yet so good as a 'crime fighting' duo. Each has is own disfunction, but you know you want them in your corner if you ever needed people in their line of work. This is the first time I'd ever seen Donal Logue, and he suddenly became my favorite actor, making Hank Dolworth very believable. I had seen Michael Raymond James previously found him equally yummy in both roles, regardless of the kind of character being portrayed.

The show was, IMO, very successful in literally bringing the flavor of the place in which the series' events took place. There is a definite flavor to the locale, and it was well reflect in the series' theme song! I rooted for them, I cried for them, I didn't want it to end. I could have watched them for many more seasons. But I will be happy to visit them streaming, and know I will see things that I missed the first time I watched.

I recommend it highly

Easily one of the best shows of the '00s, Terriers was cancelled after one season. And, unfortunately, if it hadn't been for word-of-mouth, I would not have watched it. Do you remember the ads? Weird shots of a beach and a terrier barking. The only reference to the show was that it was set in California, near the beach. There was no indication that it was about an ex-cop and an ex-con teaming up to take down a network of criminals working to exploit a land deal. The character development throughout the season is amazing. Brilliant, brilliant writing. At least they were able to end it properly. Hopefully, Fox will do the right thing and release this on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Best show ever. I've watched the entire series at least three times. It's that good. Likeable, interesting, unique characters; incredible casting; intriguing plotting which not only has a series-wide arc but that has very unique individual episodes at the same time; great writing with quotable quotes you may remember forever. Can't say enough good stuff about this critically acclaimed and viewer-acclaimed series that got saddled with a bad poster, bad or no publicity, bad title, and bad or unlucky times-slots. All of the genius went into the show, and none into promoting it. Never mind; we'll always have this.
