This really, really shouldn't have worked. LUCIFER as a concept is too offbeat, too controversial, too sacrilegous. And to dredge up the nerd's lament, it departs too liberally from its comic book roots. It is a *gasp* buddy cop crime procedural. But, oh my days, what fun it is! Contemplate this premise: What if the literal, biblical, honest-to-gosh Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil himself, after ages and ages of reigning in Hell, got bored and went on holiday? What if he went down to Los Angeles (suck it, Georgia) and opened a nightclub? And then what if he decided to partner with a cop to solve crimes?

Several things have to click in order to make this endeavor work. Most importantly, the guy playing Old Scratch has to have the chops. Well, English actor Tom Ellis is a find, although I've no doubt them Brits across the pond are familiar with his résumé. Ellis is effortless at being diabolically charming, and you cannot repudiate that playful gleam in his eyes. Most times, you and me tend to crap on those smarmy, obnoxious, dickish roles. Only, this time, those traits are warranted. Of course, the Devil would be smarmy and obnoxious and dickish and would say stuff like "I gave up an awesome foursome to be here." Women love bad boys, and this guy is the ultimate bad boy.

LUCIFER is at its best when it gives Ellis room to ham it up. And yet you can't sleep on Lauren German who I feel has crackling chemistry with Ellis. She grounds Ellis' more grandiose take. She's a striking presence and I simply love her character's back story - because only in L.A., right? But there's something about LAPD Detective Chloe Decker, gargantuan chip on her shoulder, pariah in her own department, that renders her immune to Lucifer's infernal brand of persuasion.

Enjoying the reboot of the X-Files, I tuned in to check out the premiere of FOX’s new program Lucifer. The premise of the lord of the underworld living among mortals on Earth seemed interesting, and although it was not quite what I expected, Lucifer did not disappoint, and is a program that I hope to follow through what is scheduled to be a 13 episode first season.

Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) has abandoned his duties in Hell to become the proprietor of a LA night club. When a friend is dies in his arms, Morningstar is interrogated and eventually arrested by police detective Chloe Dancer (Lauren German Hostel Part 2). Due to his uniquely beguiling personality, Morningstar comes to join Dancer in her investigation, and quickly becomes involved in her personal life. When the murderer is uncovered, the pair become even closer, raising the anticipation for the events to come.

Born in Wales, Tom Ellis makes one very charming and debonair devil. Although English accents seem a little too prevalent on American television, it works very well here, providing an aura of sophistication and class, and establishing an aura of separation between Lucifer and those around him. Morningstar’s acerbic speech is integral to his character. His sense of justice and morality may be unexpected, but makes him hard to dislike. If his demeanor remains consistent going forward, the character will probably become a huge fan favorite.

Teaming a male with a female who initially do not get along, is formulaic and nothing new, but it’s still effective, as Ellis and German have very good chemistry together. D. B.

We all know the gist of the biblical myth. In the beginning of time, God's best, brightest, and favorite Angel got himself cast out of Heaven with many of his brethren for rebelling against the divine plan for humanity. Rather than serve in Heaven, the vainglorious Angel of this story decided it would be far better to create and rule his own kingdom in the aftermath of his fall from grace: this is the Hell we know. Flash forward to the year 2016 and we learn that Lucifer Morningstar has resigned his lengthy tenure as ruler of Hell and taken up residence in the city of Los Angeles. For the last five years, he has been enjoying a relatively quiet 'retirement' as the proprietor of Lux, LA's most elite piano bar. This very interesting story is loosely based on the entertaining graphic novel series, 'Lucifer', written by Mike Carey. In the novels, and now in the television show on Fox, Lucifer Morningstar is depicted with a sense of class, style, and sophistication that elevate the subject matter far above the standard supernatural horror fare. THIS Devil is definitely not the Devil we all presume we know. These modern tales --ironically set in the city of angels--cannot help but provide much food for thought. While light and darkness coexist there is certainly a lot of room for exploration of the 'grey areas' in the sultry city of Los Angeles. God has a vested interest in the activities of Lucifer, and is keeping close tabs on his troublesome creation now that he is topside. The cosmic balance of good and evil in the Universe seems to have shifted now that Lucifer has left his throne in Hell unoccupied. What is Lucifer REALLY up to? Will the Angels of Heaven, as God's enforcers, be willing to dabble in wrongdoing or immoral deeds to keep Lucifer in check? Apparently so! D.B.Read more ›
