Claire Ramsey is in love with Jack Cavanaugh, a man known as the Pimpernel -- a magician who fights against an evil organization that has infiltrated almost every aspect of the modern world. A year ago Jack rescued Claire from a life of crime, and she is only beginning to understand what he and his companions do. One night will change everything. Claire goes to a royal ball dressed in the most exquisite dress she's ever imagined. She has no idea about the many layers of intrigue or the real identity of the people in attendance. Her future and her relationship with Jack hang in the balance, and it all hinges on the answer to one question.
I recommend reading Pimpernel first. Actually, go back and read all of them. They are so worth it!
Pimpernel: Royal Ball definitely goes into my best books of the year list for 2017.
Pimpernel: Royal Ball is no exception to the rule. This is truly an adventure with new twists added to what we know about Jack (aka the Pimpernel), Margot and Kali and their world. But this adventure is dressed up in a Ball Gown! Imagine Cinderella with a shot of Sriracha, and that is a bit of what you can expect when you pick up Royal Ball. A little bit of what you already know, but WOW, what is that kick?? Um I like it. Yep, Cinderella and Sriracha...
I do recommend reading a couple of Pratt's books first: Pimpernel and Walk of Infamy. Both books will help you have insight into what is going on in this story. It will take a while for you to catch up if you don't at least read Pimpernel first. Walk of Infamy is optional, but highly recommended.
What are you doing still reading my review, you should already be reading Royal Ball!
A commanding figure in an elite, stabilizing worldwide society brings in a former member of a suppressive society, a woman who wants to join the society but it being shut out, and a woman with mad combat skills and a life-debt to a member of that society (but no interest in the society) in the name of love, free choice and enhancement of life, while risking lives. A story about individual skills, choices and wishes, and how they come together to change things for those who have them and the people around them.
The writing was comparable to any of my big-name favorites like Brandon Mull or Stephenie Meyer. I could understand what was happening and relate to the characters' needs and desires, and dangers felt real. The clues needed to understand events as the characters experience them are skillfully placed. This virtual world is at once understandable and mind-boggling, established and evolving. A definite sequel to Pimpernel, which you should read first, and an apparent prequel to the story I'm sure the author wants to tell next.
If there is a negative, it is that the story seems too short--a short story or novella, rather than a novel. The story presented is the ideal mixture of brief and explained. I would just like more of it, particularly as lead-in at the beginning of the novel.
