Unfortunately, these locks are easy to open without use of the key and bike thieves know about it. I recently had my rear wheel stolen while using Pinhead skewers. After asking at local bike shops, I've discovered that they can be opened with a universal socket such as the product from Gator Grip <...>

Update on Aug 2013:
I received a set of washers from Pinhead to use to prevent the locks from so easily being opened. With the washers I was unable to get the locks off with the Gator Grips. But I imagine that someone can still get these off with some effort. I live in Oakland and park my bike at the West Oakland Bart station. Needless to say, it is a high crime area. I will still lock both wheels with a u lock even with the pinhead locks and the new washers. I think that these will work well if you are in a low crime area or are leaving it locked up for a short period of time.

For those concerned about thieves defeating this product with a universal socket such as the Gator Grip, the company now has these "security washers" that prevents such tools to be used. If for some reason you didn't receive one with your order OR you currently have one, contact pinhead and they will send you the washers for free.

With that being said, quality appears well made. Parts have no gotten loose on me yet. The only complaint I have is that the seat post lock is somewhat large and ugly, but if you look at the design, I guess there's no other way to implement their locking system without it being so ugly. Better to have piece of mind and live with ugliness than worry about missing seats I guess.

All and all, it's a great insurance investment.

I just bought a new Specialized road bike, and I enjoy taking long rides and stopping for an hour or two to eat, have a drink, or do some shopping. This purchase brings a bit more peace of mind. This set protects essentially your entire bike, including both the front/rear wheels, seat post, and the entire front stem. I had a bike shop install everything except for the seat clamp, which they claimed would not be compatible even though it was.

Everyone will tell you that there is no way to 100% prevent your bike from theft, especially in New York, but with these special nuts installed to replace the quick release/hex screws on most bikes, and with a decent u-lock/chain to secure your entire frame, most thieves will simply move on to easier pickings.

I already had a set of these for one of my bikes, and I decided to get another set for my new bike. Everything works great. The set now comes with a special washer so it can't be removed with gator grips. The rear wheel skewer was just barely long enough for my bike. Sadly the seatpost lock was incompatible with my seatpost clamp.

Please do not waste your money on these. I don't normally take the time to review much of anything but I think it is only fair to warn someone who is thinking about spending good money on these thinking it will help insure their wheels are there when they get back. Here is my experience. I bought a bike, that all in all cost me about $3,000 on Oct 2014. The wheels alone are about $800 and I use my bike as my primary means of transportation, I don't own a car. So when I bought my bike I did as much research as I could on ways to secure my bike from thieves. Overall these get great reviews, and even my bike shop told me how hard these were to remove without the key. A couple of months ago my locker at the gym got broken into and the thief stole a bunch of my stuff including the key to these skewers. I was so mad because that meant if I get a flat or need to do some kind of maintenance on my wheels it was going to be a PAIN. Today was the day I was dreading, I needed to put new tires on my wheels but had these damn skewers on there and no key. Now I am NO mechanic, and do not consider myself mechanically inclined. I went over to my bike and looked down at the skewers to see how I was going to get them off. It took me less than a minute to figure it out, it took me longer to find the "tools: because I don't really own any. Long story short, all it took was a philips head screw driver and a can of beans (I don't own a hammer) to tap it loose and simply unscrew it, you can probably use a sharp stick and a rock just as easily (I am staring at a pen on my desk right now thinking that would probably have worked too). I didn't even damage them when using these "tools" to knock them loose enough to unscrew.Read more ›

My wheels haven't been stolen so far so that is a plus. The seat post clamp is garbage though. The bolt snapped in half when I tried to tighten it. I emailed customer support for a replacement and they asked me to send in a picture, which I did, and they just never responded.

This is not a 100% theft-proof method to secure a bike. In fact, there is nothing out there to completely protect a bike from a thief with the exception of keeping it inside the home. Even then, it can possibly be taken away along with other belongings in case of home theft/robbery. Having said this, Pinhead is a better deterrent than the standard screws and bolts. With the new washers, the gator-grip unlocking issue has been resolved as well to some extent. However, a few users have been able to remove/open the locking system with regular household items (can of beans and screwdriver).

I personally think there would be more of a placebo affect with this system. To me, these are like locking a car (without alarm) to protect a sound system. It takes a thief less than 20 seconds to steal the system from a typical locked car (including prying open the door), whereas much less from an unlocked car. Pinhead is better because it may take another 10 seconds (which may be a deterrent) compared to another bicycle parked next to yours. IMO, U-lock is a still a better choice, because it will take another few seconds with the right tools.

I purchased the whole set as an additional deterrent, and won't be surprised to see a missing seat or wheel someday.
