About the author

Passionate might best describe Liz Tolsma. She loves writing, research, and editing. Her passion shone through in her first novel which was a double award finalist. On any given day, you might find her pulling weeds in her perennial garden, walking her hyperactive dog, or curled up with a good book. Nothing means more to her than her family. She’s married her high-school sweetheart twenty-eight years ago. Get her talking about international adoption, and you might never get her to stop. She and her husband adopted three children, including a son who is a U.S. Marine, and two daughters.

I thought the historical aspect of the story was interesting albeit disturbing. The romance just seemed out of place to me. For instance, they are racing around to find her daughter and thinking about their romance at the same time. It just didn’t seem like an appropriate time to be doing that. My feeling is that since the subject is so disturbing, wrap up the romance at the end. I know some readers will think it would be a rushed romance. I personally just can’t wrap my head around human suffering and romance running parallel in a book. In “The Green Dress”, it wasn’t as prominent. I will still continue the series, though.
I read The Pink Bonnet in a day and a half, unable to stop until I knew what would happen. It is a plot-driven story, which makes Cecile and Percy somewhat two-dimensional characters. That said, they are characters you can root for. Cecile, as the grieving mother, wins instant sympathy, but Percy wins more empathy. He has been completely duped into working with evil--basically signing his soul over to the devil--because of his own pain. Thus, seeing Percy make a turnaround and uncover the truth is extremely gratifying. I'm not sure if it happened at the right pace, but I loved the arc.
The Pink Bonnet's suspense is also spot-on. I thought I knew where it was going, only to be surprised. Kudos to Liz especially, because for a long time, it seems like two children could be Millie. I thought I absolutely knew which one, but Liz's writing was tight enough, and sparse enough, to make me wonder a couple of times. Liz also pulled off a couple other twists, such as the kidnapping of the other nursery school girls, and a climax that ended in tragedy, though not at all the way I thought it would. The very actions of Georgia Tann and what she was able to get away with saying and doing, will make your blood run hot and cold at the same time.
Liz's research into Georgia Tann and the TN Children's Home Society shines on every page without being dry. She's as thorough as Lisa Wingate in Before We Were Yours, although Liz's novel is much shorter. Actually, the compact length makes the research and plot pop more.
I wish the spiritual thread were stronger. Cecile and later Percy appropriately cry out to God throughout the book. Cecile experiences raw emotions, such as being angry at God. However, spiritual conversations and growth aren't as present as they could be. Again, this is likely because the book is plot-driven, but I feel like Liz could've committed more to that thread. I also wonder if the ending was realistic, considering what often happened to Georgia Tann's victims. Not that I wanted a bad ending for Millie--not at all. But...hmmm, I don't know. It kind of feels like the Freedom Train in Kate Breslin's Such a Time. It works, but it feels too untrue to history in a way. Then again, I wanted Georgia Tann et. al. arrested and the key thrown down the sewer. Sooooo….
Overall, The Pink Bonnet is a short, gripping novel that will keep you up at night. You'll want to prepare, possibly with tissues, but I do recommend you read it at least once.
The cover of this book felt very haunting to me, setting me up for what was inside this book. This cover is something that will stay with me for a long time. In this book, Cecile Dowd is a struggling widow, working to take make sure her and her daughter, Millie Mae, have what is needed. A neighbor taking care of Millie Mae called Georgia Tann to get "help" for the child, under the premise that it was temporary. Now Cecile is desperate to find her daughter and ends up having help from a lawyer that works for Georgia Tann. The first few pages of this book was pretty tame but not far after that this story took off. I could NOT put this book down, stayed up late and read it in just less than 2 days. As I read, I felt all the emotions in this book. Liz Tolsma definitely put me right there in this story. The characters in this book are well written and some actually real people. I really found myself drawn to Cecile. Her despair and desperate need to find her child. As a mother I could relate on that level. Her faith and hope were admirable. This is a fast paced, action packed story. I cannot describe adequately the emotions that ran through me throughout this book. This book is one that will stay with me for a LONG time. This book is the second in this series but each book is about a different time and crimes in many different places. I have the first book that I need to read next and then I cannot wait for the rest in this series. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical True Crime, you will NOT be disappointed. I give this book 5+ STARS.
I received this book this from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.
Liz Tolsma masters the role of storyteller while guarding the truth. Even when the truth is horrifying. Well done.
