The fourth Pink Panther film with Peter Sellers and directed by Blake Edwards is easily the most over-the-top, but it's still pretty entertaining. The story finds Clouseau's former boss (Herbert Lom) totally insane after years of enduring the bumbling detective, and sequestered in a castle with a death-ray gun. Clouseau has to stop him from using the weapon on the world, and his efforts to do so make for some choice, Edwards-style slapstick. The quotient of destruction (a Clouseau staple) is higher than average, but there is also real wit--particularly in a final scene where Lom re-creates his most famous role as the monster from the 1962 Phantom of the Opera. --Tom Keogh

Peter Sellers did six Pink Panther movies. However, only the four middle ones truly count. The first is a vehicle for David Niven and the last was pieced together after Sellers' death in 1980. A SHOT IN THE DARK is the first to have all the Pink Panther characters. It is good. RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER made a decade later is very good. PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN is the very best, a laugh beginning to end, plenty of great skits, not a dragging moment. REVENGE OF THE PINK PANTHER has as many great scenes, but slows down a few times. PPSA is the one I recommend above the others.

The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) is a movie that attains its goal of nonstop slapstick over-the-top comedy. Starting with The Return of the Pink Panther a year earlier, this second run of movies after a decade hiatus portray Inspector Clouseau in a much less serious light (not that he was ever serious to begin with). This time, instead of the pink panther diamond being in the plot, it's a manhunt for Clouseau, courtesy of a still insane Dreyfus. There are plenty of spills and thrills, and an excellent fight between Clouseau and Cato. This movie, along with Return of the Pink Panther, are comic relief, and 'Strikes' has a plot that borders on ridiculous. This of course is a positive thing, because the goal is slapstick; it's just hilarious that Dreyfus goes to such extreme measures to try to oust Clouseau. At times, it almost feels like this movie centers around Dreyfus more. However, Clouseau still has a strong presence, and Sellers' portrayal is once again done flawlessly. I highly recommend this comedy- it will appeal to all audiences. The actors are in top form. 9/10

Hilarous! I watch this movie at least once a year and never get tired of it, laughing out loud each viewing. Great music. Too many highlights to mention them all: the opening sequence at the asylum; Dreyfus spying on Clouseau from below combined with the battle with Cato; interrogating the household; Oktoberfest assassination attempts; the hotel room; Clouseau trying to enter the castle! Dreyfus is at his best as a supervillain. Some of the funniest lines in the series. The movie has subtle details to make scenes even funnier, for example the math on the chalkboard is wrong.

The movie's trailer in the special features is worth watching because it begins with an introduction by Dreyfus and has brief moments that didn't make it into the film: a bandaged Clouseau falling down steps while exiting a plane, and Clouseau disguised as "Dijon, Mustard Salesman". A future release would be nice if they had all the deleted scenes that showed up in Trail Of.

"The Pink Panther Strikes Again" is one of the defining moments of my early film going experience. I saw it when I was thirteen (sat through it twice) at my neighborhood bijou. I went to my parochial school and during recess related the film's juiciest parts to my male buddies. I was overheard by a nosy female classmate and she told Mother Superior about my off color remarks. After getting tongue lashed about my impure thoughts I was sent home(this is punishment?) and told to contemplate and maybe make an act of contrition. Oh, well. The movie? In my mind Peter Sellers is the greatest comic force to ever hit the silver screen. After a series of box office bombs and ten years after "A Shot in the Dark"(the best in the Clouseau series) Sellers revived the character in "The Return of the Pink Panther" in 1975. That film was a mixed bag but a box office success nonetheless so another entry was inevitable. In 1976 "Strikes Again" came out. I think this is the second best "Pink Panther" film. It's a mixture of witty verbal gags and over-the-top slapstick. For the most part it works but there are some misses. Sellers was incapable of phoning in a performance but to my mind seems a little tired here. I think that has more to do with the heart attack he had recently suffered than any boredom with the character. Herbert Lom, however, as Clouseau's nemesis Chief Inspector Dreyfus has never been better. Lom was usually relegated to supporting roles and director Blake Edwards gives him the opportunity to chew the scenery in royal fashion and he goes for broke here. Another bonus is the presence of the delectable Lesley-Anne Down as the Russian assassin sent to kill Clouseau but falls in love with him instead. Down gave good performances in "The Betsey" and "The Great Train Robbery" later but never achieved the success that her talents merited. I would recommend this film as a good entry level for those unfamiliar with Sellers' comic genius and then graduate them to "Dr. Strangelove".

There are many Pink Panther movies, the work of Blake Edwards, Peter Sellers et al was quite productive. This movie should come with a warning that viewers could experience life-threatening paroxysms of laughter, and for sheer, diabolical comic intensity, this movie takes the cake. "Ah- yes, it is all coming back to me now..." I was fortunate to hear Sellers' performances on the old Goon Show as a child, and the experience was quite formative of my sense of humor. Some say Monty Python is the epitome of British humor, but I think the center of that storm lies further back, closer to the Goons. The chemistry of the characters in "Strikes Again" was transcendental. They inspire me to relate to others similarly in my real life, which has been, of course, nothing but a cartoon on many occasions.

Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers - what a winning combination. I love this film so much. The story is utterly unbelievable and just thoroughly and hysterically funny. The accents are part of the fun. I sometimes do them myself and it always makes me smile. This I think is the best of all of the PP films with Peter Sellers. Herbert Lom (Dreyfus his boss and former Chief Inspector) has completely lost it and is in a funny farm. He appears to be cured and about to be released when the now Chief Inspector Clouseau pays him a visit to offer support for his release and proceeds to tip him (quite literally in one instance) back over the edge again. There is a then a succession of wonderful gags, and utter hilarity, side splitting nonsense and for glamour Lesley Ann Down as a Russian Agent who is sent to kill Sellers adds to the interest. Michael Robbins also makes a wonderful Angela Jarvis/Jarvis the Butler double life, short but highly amusing appearance. It is extremely funny and always lifts me up when I watch it and I do - time and time again. A musical number from Tom Jones is another nice addition to what is literally a great movie. Buy it if you love PP and anything which is utterly bizaare and over the top.

Another side-splitting offering from the comic dream-team of Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers. Unlike the previous Pink Panther movies, this one has a totally ridiculous plot and the central theme is the crazed attempts of the now out-of-control Dreyfus to assassinate Clouseau, even if he has to recruit 26 international killers and obliterate entire cities in the process. I remember finding it hilarious the first and second times around, but watching it again, there were longer gaps between the laughs. However, despite a rather uneven pace and clumsy attempts at dark humour, there are countless classic scenes which remain indescribably funny no matter how many times I have watched them. The initial encounter between the apparently-cured Dreyfus and a slightly condescending Clouseau, the staff interrogation (the gardener's disembodied voice ... just brilliant), the treadmill gag, the assault on the castle, the laughing gas scene. After repeated viewings, I actually enjoyed some of the less obvious humour, like when Clouseau finds his hotel bed in disarray (Swine maid!) or his tussle with his shirt when he's trying to impress Olga.

As I said about The Return Of The Pink Panther [DVD ], Peter Sellers was a comic genius and his brand of classic, pure comedy remains timeless. The best parts are any scenes where Sellers is unleashed in bizarre situations, and his brilliant physical humour comes into play.
