NIGHTMARES: Hanging of child. Animal drowning.
Verified purchase
Although this movie is well done, there are several disturbing scenes. For example, two evil men chase Pinocchio in a dark field at night. They capture him and use a rope to hang him from a tree. The men sit at the base of the tree and talk about waiting for Pinocchio to stop breathing so they can steal his gold coins. Although Pinocchio is a puppet, he looks and acts like a child. Seeing a small body hanging from a tree while slightly gasping for air made my daughter cry and gave her nightmares. This movie is not for children under 14.

A movie Hollywood isn't capable of making
Verified purchase
This is an extraordinarily well done move. The cinematography, directing, acting, storytelling is at a level Hollywood simply can't produce. Very highly recommended for adults as well as older children. There are about 60 seconds across two scenes that may upset a small sheltered child. The version I got had an English language dup, based on other reviews I read it appears that initial releases only had English subtitles.
The typical Hollywood churn (and even Disney) relies almost entirely on special effects, explosions, and CGI to carry the movie. The script and acting are just afterthoughts with minimal effort. This movie is the exact opposite. It is storytelling, directing, cinematography first.
This is an instant classic that I'll watch many more times, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Brilliant Art

Brilliant movie - makes It a classic. Note if you have issues with any movie not made in America, dubbed or subtitles are a little over your head, then this movie is not for you. But those who enjoy art and true movie magic - this Pinocchio is for you.

children shouldn't watch it infact NOBODY should watch it!

I don't care if the original story from 1881 involves Pinocchio being executed. I am older and grew up with Disney's Pinocchio. This movie made me sick to my stomach seeing Pinocchio hanging from a tree. How morbid and cruel. I wish I never watched this movie. It left me with a sickening feeling. I regret watching it. I turned it off after seeing this little boy hanging from a tree. It started off pretty sweet but took a sinister turn that I wasn't prepared for. That scene will be forever etched into my mind...thanks for nothing.

What is the measure of a boy's achievement?
Verified purchase
What is the measure of a boy's achievement while he's still a boy? His father's greatest wish becomes his own. Italian texture, color and fantasy like no other - a mixture of the stage and cinema - with woodpeckers for fabrication control!. How many times have we seen the story of Pinocchio over the years but ignored the symbolism because of cartoonish presentation? This one is encouraging us to read the book. Many wanted it to be viewable by the very young, which is understandable. Similar themes and story lines can be found in the beloved musical Oliver! (1968) from Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist as well Steven Spielberg's movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001). The moral issues here could be grasped by older children under supervision but be prepared to answer difficult questions. The screenplay demonstrates harsh lessons and realities for the would-be boy such as abuse, trickery, thievery, lying, death, adoption, rejection, and vengeance - as well as truth, confession and justice. Consider intent, pause and give it a chance (e.g. brilliantly costumed black rabbits "instantly ready" carrying Pinocchio's coffin) as he contemplates becoming human and its reward - gratefulness, empathy, helpfulness, friendship, loyalty, work ethic, eldercare and love.

As an adult I loved this and all Matteo’s films!

This movie isn’t for children, so parents should watch it first before showing it to their children. That way you can fast forward any parts that are too extreme or scary for your older children. It is a beautiful film and The only problem I have is the scenes sometimes feel rushed as if they had to fit it all into a 2 hour time frame...it should have been a longer film so that each scene /part of the story could be fuller...like when Pinocchio was swallowed by the whale/shark creature...it could have been so amazing if it weren’t rushed! I love this director but he needs someone who is talented at knowing how to not rush stories and then his storybook movies will be the best!!
This is a beautiful film and deserves to be at least 2 1/2 hour long...if they had 3 hours to work with this would have been a perfect Pinocchio!

Can I give negative stars? Ridiculous. I have 4 children watching and all of the sudden there's "KKK" members and Pinocchio hanging from a tree??? Absolutely ridiculous.

Hauntingly Beautiful
Verified purchase
Hauntingly Beautiful, scenic and grand. Costumes and interpretations of many of the characters are amazing. So why 3 stars? Because I spent the whole movie actively wanting Pinocchio to fail. I remember the cartoon, there was a naivety to the character that allowed him to be charming while still causing trouble. This version is just a dumb little demon shit who I don't think ever truely learns anything. At every turn I wanted to punch him not save him. If not for him, the whole lead character, I think this could have been a new classic. Lol. I do think some people may love this version of Pinocchio, it's just not for me.
