This was a very good read that follows the early initial settlers of Pinyon Creek in the Owens Valley area of California. The story takes the reader from the time of their first arrival, through their efforts to carefully develop the area initially for their own enjoyment, and then later on by encouraging others from outside the area to come and experience this extremely diverse and beautiful portion of California. The Mediterranean climate in California is characterized by warm to hot, dry summers and mild to cool, wet winters. Southern California has widespread areas that receive only 5 -10 inches of rain per year. The small but quickly growing City of Los Angeles did not have enough water to support the growth of the City. They were hungry for water, and were determined to get it. William Mulholland and former Los Angeles Mayor Fred Eaton led the effort to find and deliver the water to Los Angeles at all costs. They only cared about gaining wealth and power in the process, and were not concerned with the repercussions to the Pinyon Creek/Owens Valley Watershed area. Ms. Pendleton delivers this story in heartwarming manner, while at the same time, capturing many details of the theft of the Owens Valley water.
This is a delightful read, and an antidote to the malaise of our times. The people in Pinyon Creek live in a world of tangible challenges and shared goals. Their sense of agency, of deciding to do something and then doing it without whining, is a breath of fresh air, whether that means filling a depleted lake with hatchery-bred fish or setting up a (silent)movie theater in town. The Richardsons and their neighbors are winningly pragmatic, both in their family lives and as a community. An orphaned child is adopted without fuss. Chilren take responsibility for learning, working, and creating their own fun. Adults take lightheartedly serious risks: from opening a sanitarium for victims of tuberculosis and the lung diseases caused by mining dust, to opening a ski resort in the high Sierras. Mules learn to dance when the team needs to round a corner, and win our respect as beloved animals. I'll turn to this book on the many days that I turn away from the New York Times and Public Radio. Recommend highly for book clubs, especially those also fed up with the greed and self-pity of today. Ms. Pendleton has a deft, light hand, and an intimate knowledge of the places and history she clearly loves.
The town of Pinyon Creek is in the middle of the Eastern Sierras in California and in the midst of historical happenings. The importance of water, which has always been at the forefront of California's history becomes real to the reader. The residents and animals that we meet in this book are true and interesting characters that I enjoyed spending time with. As I learned more about the farmers, campers, hikers, and movie people, I appreciated how they all fit into a rich tapestry of individuals who made up early twentieth century California. I think everyone will be able to find a part of this book to love.
