My phone is a Google Nexus 5 with Lollipop 5.1. I have been anxiously waiting for a head unit with Android Auto, so that I can have Google Maps navigation. As soon as this one came out, I bought it and had it professionally installed in my 2015 Subaru WRX. That all went super smooth.

I bought this for its Android Auto, so I can navigate with Google Maps. But I purposely bought this most expensive "flagship" version because it has built-in navigation. The Maps navigation is handled by my phone, which needs to be connected with the wireless service provider. If I drive through an area where my phone has no service (or if the phone is unavailable for some reason) then there's no Maps navigation. So it's worth for me to pay a few more $$$ to have the built-in, memory-resident Pioneer navigation system as a reliable backup.

Sound is terrific. And the configuration possibilities are mind boggling. It wants you to specify whether your driving position is Left or Right. It adjusts the screens so that controls are on the side near to you. Also, you can tell it the position in the car of the person listening to music (the driver; or the VIP in the limousine's back seat), so the sound seems to surround that position. You can also specify how much volume you want to send to each individual speaker in the car.
In my previous car I had the -- then! -- top-of-the-line Alpine navigation deck. By comparison with this AVIC-8100NEX, the Alpine now looks primitive.

A real cool feature is the deck's Speed Limit Warning. I set mine to go off at 100%. As soon as I exceed the speed limit, I get a warning.

The unit is ok however when using it with siriusXM setting the text showing what is playing is black on 3/4 of the stations and is un-redable. Pioneer sais that anything that can't be tagged will show up as black text against a black blackground which to me makes no sense. Everything needs to be white whether you can tag a song or not. Hello Pioneer!!!
Also there is no zoom in or zoom out buttons on the map which also makes no sense. The auto zoom doesn't go far back enough to see what is coming up ahead. Pioneer please provide a firmware update tochange the text color and make this radio usable!

I'm huge into car audio. Always have been and have had a $25K system installed into a show car that has been in magazines before. So I am definitely not a novice. With that, let me say - amazing head unit!! I bought a Nexus 6 just to make sure I could use the Android Auto and it really is a top of the line unit. I've had the thing since the 2nd day it was out and haven't found any flaws so far. Touch screen is very reactive and quick. I was also able to hook up 2 USB cables to the back, one for my phone and the other I have a Samsung 256GB M.2 SSD drive attached loaded with a ton of movies. Loading the drive is fast and tapping the USB button on the home screen brings up a list with every movie, each with the title I gave it in Windows and a preview thumbnail. I also installed the SiriusXM receiver and steering wheel controls. Last but not least I added the parking brake bypass only because I never got a positive answer if it was needed or not. After it was installed my installer held down the lower left corner 1/2" up and 1/2" over and the system automatically switched it into a permanent bypass. I knew this prior but didn't want to have to pull it back out if it needed a bypass in conjunction to work. You may want to try it without if you're feeling adventurous though. Overall I love this unit and all the features.

9/6/2015: Update - Now that I've used it for a few months I can say that I am happy with the unit, but it's still has some issues.
-I like having Google Maps along with the built in nav. On road trips I like the built in nav because it's easier to find gas stations and restaurants than google maps. When traffic is bad I like Google maps better because it shows secondary street traffic with alternate routes and the time difference.
-The built in nav voice is kinda wonky. It speaks the names some highways in a weird way and every time you hit a toll booth it bugs you to keep left.
-I got the mic so I could Auto EQ my system and I was surprised how big a difference it made. My system is thumping!
-I still don't like Android Auto except for Google Maps. They added some apps (still not Pandora or Waze!) and there is no way to access your text messages. I can send texts by voice now though.
-I got a matte screen protector and it helped a lot with the glare issue. I recommend Best Skins Ever, they have one custom cut for the unit and it comes with a lifetime warranty.
-It does not appear that Pioneer is going to release the AVICSync app anytime soon, if ever. Lots of functionality promised that was never delivered.

Original Review:
GOOD:
-High quality sound system. Much better than the OEM system that came with my vehicle. It's a Pioneer.
-Lots of connection options, almost too many: HD AM/FM, CD/DVD/MP3 discs, Siruis/XM (separate hardware), Bluetooth, HDMI, 2xUSB, SD Card, Aux stereo, Aux video in/out. iPod, Apple Car Play, Android Auto, Mirrorlink. You can have seperate audio/video for the back seats. You can have 2 cameras. I probably forgot a few others.
-Nice touchscreen interface. Once you figure it out, it's similar to a cell phone.
