Pioneer AVIC-8200NEX is more than just their flagship navigation receiver -it's a multimedia MARVEL that doesn't force you to choose which phone you can travel with. It offers compatibilty with both Android auto and Apple carplay, two platforms for simplified integration of common smartphone functions through the receiver's advanced 7" capacitive touchscreen display.

INSTALLATION: We used Crutchfield's website to determine the appropriate additional parts, but without buying them from Crutchfield--- it's an interesting install. It's not bad, but it takes some brain cells to figure out what goes where. The colors of the wires do NOT match up. If you are concerned-- buy the extra parts for Crutchfield and they can walk you through install.
INSTALLATION TIPS: The AppleCar Play only works if it is plugged into USB Port 1. USB port 2 is for charging only. You don't want to figure that out after you put the car back together like we did!
NAVIGATION PERFORMANCE: The navigation feature is much better than the factory navigation. We live near a city that has many divided highways with multiple exits and then right after that there are more exits. Most navigation systems will struggle to convey where to go when the roads are so confusing. This system has a picture of the road with each highway road sign so it makes staying in the right lane much easier!
APPLE CARPLAY: This feature is one of my favorite things about the AVIC-8200 NEX. It connects seamlessly and only has a few issues if the internet is spotty. I love that I can listen to Pandora, iTunes and Audible, but I wish I could also listen to other apps like Amazon Music. I love the fact that I could cancel Satellite Radio is going to save me some money in the long run.
BLUETOOTH: This may be more of an issue with the Suburu than the navigation system, but it is difficult to use the bluetooth feature. Suburus are considered to have a higher amount of road noise. I don't think it's that bad, but our other car is a JEEP so maybe my perception is off. The road noise interferes with the bluetooth quite a bit. When I've tried to use the bluetooth feature-- no one can understand me because it picks up EVERYTHING.
If the car is not moving and you are talking on the bluetooth while you are parked-- it's fine, but I don't see the point of that so much.
SETTINGS: This navigation system is annoying if you keep it set to factory. It will warn you as soon as you go over the speed limit, it is LOUD and the volume button doesn't control it, and the navigation feature will warn you about everything about 5 times. It isn't so straightforward to find the settings to change this.
To change the navigation settings and volume, you will have to open the navigation and find the settings for it. All other settings are controlled by the main settings. Once you have it custom to your likes-- it's a great little navigation system.
BACK UP CAMERA: The backup camera, for some odd reason, wants to be reversed. So what is on your left appears to be on your right. You can change this in the settings. Otherwise, it works well.
DEFECTIVE: This is our second Pioneer AVIC-8200 NEX because the first one we bought was defective (from a different seller). If you notice that sometimes the backup camera doesn't work or sometimes apple play doesn't work, but most of the time it is fine... it can be a sign of impending doom for your system. Ours just quit turning on about 3 weeks after we installed it and then it would randomly turn on and then turn back off. It was possessed!
Make sure you sign up for the Pioneer warranty and find out what the seller's return policy is before you buy from a 3rd party.
ADS-MRR Maestro RR - Universal Radio Replacement & SWI and the Toyota accessory kit T01 iDatalink Maestro ADS-HRN-RR-TO1 TO1 Plug & Play T-Harness for Toyota Vehicles along with a Black Metra Double Din faceplate kit Metra 95-8214TB Double DIN Dash Kit for Toyota Tacoma 2005-2011 Vehicle (Black). This review isn't about the Maestro stuff, otherwise the review would be lower based on the diagrams and instructions. The radio performs excellently in the truck. The sound is definitely clearer, but it did take some adjustments with the built in EQ to get it how I liked it... but that was after 7 years of getting used to the JBL out-of-the-box sound. I'd buy it again for sure. The AndroidAuto interface is awesome. The navigation has a few differences from my old Garmin standalone, but now that I'm used to it I think it's better. I bought this because my wife got a new GMC Terrain that is all computerized with touch screen interface a while back and it had me itching to get a new truck as well. This unit is so much better than the built in unit in hers. It even displays vehicle information that I had no idea my truck even tracked (exact tire pressure, RPMs, manifold temp, load, etc). I'm good to go now for another 7 years without a payment. :-)
The only two things about this radio that I don't like are related to volume controls. 1) I would like to have a spinning style knob for volume. The push button is OK, and I mostly use my steering wheel controls, but there's just something I miss about it's quick access and feel of the spinner. 2) When you turn the volume up or down a UI volume indicator pops up at the bottom and stays there for a few seconds. It hides the options underneath of it while its up so you have to wait for it to disappear before you can get to them. My thought is that this is a big screen so the volume could have its own permanent space.
It doesn’t take to iOS upgrades well as I’m now unsure when I ask for Siri if it will work or not.
Was professionally installed.
The firmware upgrades don’t appear to be updating on their site any more due to the age of the unit, but they appear to be mostly for morale anyway.
It plays CD/DVD, Bluetooth, HDMI (for now) but any unit without CarPlay can do that.

Few small critiques that I wont have effect the rating (this is still top in class despite my small issues with it):
1) is when you adjust volume it pops up a very large UI for a few seconds. This covers the home button in apple carplay. The UI probably doesn't need to be so large, does it?
2) Really a pain in the butt that only one USB works for carplay and the other works for android auto. Some cars only have one good spot to put a USB port, in my case I had to buy another thing to install in the car to expose another one. Not ideal.
