Reading about these amazing women has been a journey within itself. I'm fascinated at their glory. Every chapter shines such a magnificent light on each, in the beginning. Then as the pages are turned and the story unfolds, I would become rather enraged. How dare anyone blantantly call Ella Fitzgerald overweight or point out the fact that Frida Kahlo had a moustache as if the world could not see. Then it dawned on me. It's not the regality of these women that most appeal to me. It is their will and determination to rise above oppression. The fact that they have acknowledged that no man or WOMAN is perfect and these imperfections are what actually strengthen them. My only prayer as a woman is that I have found such a cause, such a strength, such a will to rise to the occassion as have those that have pioneered before me and made this road, a little more possible... 5 stars and 2 thumbs up is not enough. I give this book jazz snaps, the literary standing ovation ;-)
Assouline has yet again published another work of art. The book itself, with all of the beautiful images and typography is meant to be put out on display. This is the perfect hostess gift, and beyond that, it is a wonderful gift to give yourself -- the gift of inspiration!
