Editorial Reviews

2010 release from the singer/actor, whose brooding good looks, rounds out the most-versatile cast to hit the FOX TV line-up, as bad-boy Puck on 19-time Emmy-nominated power house series of the decade, Glee. On Pipe Dreams, Salling chronicles the seven-year musical journey with a sound reminiscent of early classic Rock `n' Roll, alternative, and a '60's Folk-Beat-era sound.

When I pre-ordered this cd I had pretty high expectations, especially since I have the entire 'Smoke Signals' album on my MP3 player and love it. I'm very glad that it's even better than I was hoping it would be. Higher Ground is probably my favorite song on the album but each one is soulful, with a sixties folk song quality you don't hear much anymore. I'm not sure how young fans of Glee will respond to the songs because it is not typical modern music, but maybe it will introduce them to varieties of music outside of the 24/7 media machine that is the Jonas Brothers/Miley Cyrus world. I actually recommended the cd to my mom (who does not watch Glee) because it's similar to the type of music she grew up with. Overall I am extremely pleased with the cd and hope to see more albums from him in the future.

Being a fan of Mark Salling's vocals on Jericho's CD, "Smoke Signals" long before I saw him on Glee, I was excited for this album. I wasn't sure what to expect for his second record, but this doesn't disappoint. Sophomore albums have a tendency to fall short of their predecessor, but not "Pipe Dreams".

Salling is sounding even lovelier than before and his lyrics are intelligent. The music is different but somehow the same...Though I can attest to the fact that genres are played around with, there also seems to be a somewhat similar base beat that links the majority of them. For a listener like me, that's not an issue, but for some it may be.

This is a CD that I desperately wanted to sing along with as I played it for the first time; it lures you in. This music is relaxing and perfect for a night at home; In fact, this has quickly become the album that I create my drawings to.

It should also be noted that this CD is family friendly; there's nothing outrageous for your children. There are some religious tones to a few of his tracks, but if you're like me and enjoy Christian music, it's a refreshing take. If you're someone that's staunchly against it, the references are not preachy and really aren't numerous, so I doubt that it would irritate you.

I'm hoping to get copies for friends for the holidays; this is a keeper! (My personal favorites are "Musical Soulmate", the catchy "Scarlet Glasses" and the beautiful album closing "Fugitive")

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to dust off my guitar and attempt to learn these chords so I can finally enjoy playing along.

Maybe I just really like Puck, but Mark Salling's "Pipe Dreams" is refreshing. I love the music on "Glee," but this album doesn't sound like "Glee." Bravo to Mark for making an album that comes from his heart. We live in a time where we don't need permission to follow our dreams. Mark has used his success from "Glee" and given us a record that he wrote, performed, and produced. He's not auto-tuned or over-produced, and he didn't wait around for permission from an executive at a record label.

What I like most about this album is that it's so un-like his character on "Glee," which was totally unexpected. I love how Puck is kind of scary and sexy all at once. But this music shows us something else, and I think it's very sweet. Keep up the good work, Mark, and I look forward to your future work.

I think it's pretty safe to say that most everyone is here on this page because they learned of Mark Salling on Glee, and fell in love with his music and sound there. But, Mark Salling is FAR from being like Puck. This album is entirely the brain storm and effort of Mark Salling, and those who helped him to make it. For those folks who are here looking for Puck, you won't find much of him in this album. Sure, there are moments when vocally they match up... But they are few and far between, and Mark sounds MUCH more like himself on thia album. The album leans more towards an indy rock vibe, with some leaning towards R&B, and just a touch of folk music in there. Mixed all together with Mark's unique voice, it makes for an equally unique album acrsoss the board. I'm so glad he didn't allow the pressures of the music industry to force him to change the album that he wanted to make. It easily could have been just Glee: The Music, Puck. LOL But instead we have a more intimate look inside the mind of Mark Salling. If you're a Salling fan, and can keep an open mind about there being no Puck here, then I suggest getting this album. Overall, I give it a solid A-. Give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Thanks for your time folks.
Sincerely, R.A. McDowell

Like many listeners, I was first introduced to Mark Salling through his work on "Glee", and then later on his initial solo album "Smoke Signals" (released under the working name Jericho). There is something about Salling's music that is gained so immediately upon listening that you hadn't realized you'd lost it on other artists' work: a mix of originality and an infusion of caring about his work.

Salling himself wrote, produced, played every instrument on, and had at least one hand on the production of every single song on this album, and it shows in every note -- a tinge of honesty, a touch of self-deprecation. There's an intent and a theme that runs through each song, building a beautiful concept album that is at the same time completely fun to listen to.

It's hard to nail down a genre for "Pipe Dreams" -- it's part old, old style southern rock, part folk, part pop, even a little country and one half-rap song, but Salling dances through the eclectic eccentricity of the album competently, his deep, lovely, whiskey-smooth voice carrying the listener into whatever concepts he is trying to convey. While it's true that "Pipe Dreams" is a bit more produced than "Smoke Signals" was, there isn't anything lost this time at bat; if anything, there are substantial gains as certain innocent mistakes are lost and more of an experienced edge/eye looks to maintain musical competency.
