Pipe fittings, sometimes called pipe couplings or plumbing fittings, are used to connect piping, to change direction of flow, integrate additional pipes, or stop flow. Common pipe fittings for industrial pipe or residential use are the pipe coupling, elbow, tee, wye (Y), union, reducer, olet, cross, cap, plug, nipple, barb, and compression fitting.
Brass pipe fittings are popular plumbing fittings because brass fittings are malleable and resistant to high temperatures and corrosion. Brass pipe fittings can be soldered to brass pipe or other materials, but a brass fitting works best with brass pipe. A copper pipe fitting has good thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance. A PVC pipe fitting is resistant to corrosion and chemicals. Galvanized pipe fittings offer excellent resistance to rust. Stainless steel pipe fittings are resistant to corrosion and have strength-to-weight advantages. A black pipe fitting is used mostly in natural gas, liquid propane, fuel, and oil systems.
