I have to say - I was in for quite a surprise. While the first part of the book reads like a big love letter to Larry -- the bulk of the book focuses on the friendships and relationships in prison, a big love letter to the ladies at Danbury, really. The inmates are described with warm compassion and sympathy -- even the author admits her own faults and is open to communicating and working with people she didn't like very well (but several of who "grew" on her).
I found this version of Piper Kerman to be much more likeable than the one in the Netflix series. There's a lot less sex, aggression and hostility (and more home cooking!) in the book. I understand that the cable networks have to tart everything up - but I think I would have enjoyed a more mature, toned down version of the show that better reflected the author's experiences in the book.
Definitely - read the book! (
