About the Author

Mohinder L. Nayyar, P.E., ASME Fellow, is Senior Engineering Specialist for piping and valves in the engineering department of the Bechtel Power Corporation in Frederick, Maryland, and the Editor-in-Chief and an author of the sixth and seventh editions of the field-leading Piping Handbook. As a Bechtel consultant, he has assisted many leading companies, and has supervised and supported both nuclear- and fossil-fueled projects around the world. He is Chairman of the Materials Technical Committee of the ASME B31, Pressure Piping Code, and of Materials Group of ASME B31.1, Power Piping Code; a member of ASME B16 Main Committee; and several other standards committees. He lives in Brookeville, Maryland.

If you can only own one piping resource, this is IT!

If I could only own ONE piping related handbook this would absolutely be it! While there is obviously no single book out there that can possibly contain every single bit of piping related information there is, I think this book gets closer to it than any other!

I'm an entry level, approaching mid level mechanical engineer (~3 years work experience) and I do a fair amount of work with compressed gases and their piping distribution systems. I've gotten more and more into B31.3 work over the past year or two and had basically zero piping experience before that, so I started looking for a good single resource for general piping information, not just B31.3 I saw this book in the office of another engineer and started flipping through the pages and quickly knew I found what I was looking for. I researched a bit online and looked at various piping books and what they contained, but ending up purchasing this one.

This book covers SO many piping topics! From an introductory chapter on various engineering units (Work, Power, Heat, etc.), to a great overview of piping fundamentals, to detailed information on various piping materials, components (valves, fittings, etc), applicable national codes, piping design information (stresses, insulation, etc.) and many more topics! The topics are interesting enough, at least to me, that I can sit and read this page by page like a novel.

One thing to note: this edition is HUGE! The book is considerable thick at ~3.5", so just keep that in mind it's not the most comfortable lap read but for the amount of information contains I think it is well worth it! The previous edition I was looking at (not sure which one) was considerably smaller. The various editors have clearly added a lot of material over the years.

Would absolutely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good general piping resource!

Convoluted but highly useful

Well - I see my view of the book doesn't line up with others' view. I have not used it as a design handbook, but more of a background info source.

I have used this book frequently to determine types of pipe to consider, details of types of pipe material etc. I use it to 'teach' young engineers. It has the best overview of material types, appropriate uses. It is the only source I have been able to find that lists all the ANSI / ASTM and other standards for various pipe types. It has good overviews of all types of piping (PVC / CPVC / Grey Iron / Ductile Iron etc etc etc). I don't know of anywhere else to get such a broad description of all this type of info.

It is not a design manual... but is unsurpassed for reference and background info... which is the reason I bought it.

Good reference book

I, as a piping engineer have been often referencing to an ebook of this for the last two months and have just put an order of it since it is worth purchasing and keeping it. This book is worth to be called Piping Design Encyclopedia. It covers majority of piping engineering perspectives from stress analysis and material engineering to piping design. It does not scrutinize detail and complex calculations which are not necessary to most piping designers and engineers, but provides all the general information. This is perfect for piping general engineer or piping project engineer.

Do not buy this book. I repeat, do not buy this book. This book is probably over a thousand pages thick but it's poorly organized and poorly written. I highly recommend the Navco Piping Datalog over this piece of garbage. The Navco book is only 240 pages but it's very useful if you are a piping engineer.

Actually, I use my Piping Handbook almost every day. It's not so bad as a foot rest.

An annoying verbiage

I was interesting in buying a professional publication relative to piping engineering and, by chance, I was able to borrow this book from a technical library before doing what can not be undone.
How disappointing !
An annoying verbiage prevails over pages after pages.
Few design guidelines, engineering calculations and good practice recommendations.
For instance, the section dealing with the water hammer phenomenon does not contain any equation !
Supports, insulation, valves, plastic and composite materials, ... are covered in far too general terms.
Even the reduced "dictionary alike" paper format leads to a bulky and difficult to read book where chapters are broken down in dozens of pages.
This book must be viewed as a general introduction to piping design engineering but definitively not as a practical reference for day-to-day design issues.
