I am an unabashed fan of this new 40th anniversary production of Pippin. I have been waiting with bated breath for this new cast album to appear. It was worth the wait. I love the original cast album; I wore out an LP and 2 CD versions of it with Ben Vereen, John Rubenstein, Irene Ryan, Jill Clayburgh, et al. I love this new album even more.

Stephen Schwartz the record producer has done an excellent job of curating the work of Stephen Schwartz the composer. The mix and production qualities are pleasing. Each solo performance is an excellent representation of the performances I have seen on stage. Listening to the album evoked memories of the rich visuals that the show contains. The orchestra and ensemble singing soar beautifully throughout the album. Patina Miller as Lead Player shines through as authoritative and tantalizing. Terence Mann as Charlemagne manages to sound both whimsical and warlike in "War Is a Science" Matthew James Thomas' Pippin finds the right blend across the vocal spectrum of intimate subtlety in his duet "Love Song" with Rachel Bay Jones to ascending to the heights of rock star showmanship in "Corner of the Sky." Andrea Martin recreates the magic of "No Time At All" that stops the show in the middle of Act I each night at the Music Box. The ensemble sound is especially glorious in the Act I closing anthem "Morning Glow."

Even if you have not yet seen this production of "Pippin," this album will be a great way to introduce yourself to the magic that the team has created.

I recently purchased both the original Pippin and this new one. I know the original version quite well, and I love it. The gentle voices in the original carry the sound of an era. In this new version, the voices are somewhat stronger. They also dare to do things slightly differently from that first recording, and I like that. "With you" is given complete! The rhythm, reflecting our changed times, are crisper and catch our ears. The sound is spectacular. I don't much care for the filler - orchestral accompaniments to four of the songs for karaoke. But that's can be just me. The great news is a fresh approach did not mean making it bigger, bolder, and destructive of the original.78
Patina Miller - a female leading player (not the first to do this) - is wonderful. Her voice cuts and fills the role. She doesn't imitate ben Vereen's inflections. She doesn't need to. She has her own. Andrea Martin isn't quite as much fun as Irene Ryan, but she points up a few lines more tellingly. Matthew James Thomas as Pippin has some really difficult songs to sing, and he brings a little more sheer voice to the role than Rubinstein without destroying the basic feeling. "Corner of the sky" really sets the juices flowing. Rachel Bay Jones as Catherine is a little more overt and enjoys the prospect of being with Pippin. Her voice smiles (no mean achievement in CDs.)
Different? Yes. That doesn't always mean better, but it does here.

An enjoyable album of songs from the hit musical of 1972 (choreography by Bob Fosse), VERY loosely based on the story of Charlemagne, first Holy Roman Emperor, and his son Pippin. Actually the plot has next to nothing to do with medieval politics, but the themes of generation gap and young-man-in-search-of-self play well and attain a certain timelessness shifted from LBJ-IRT-Main Street USA to something more distanced and universal.

The pop-rock-folk amalgam of Stephen Schwartz's music is pleasant and upbeat, and when you have singers in the 2013 redo on the order of Matthew James Thomas, Rachel Bay Jones, Charlotte D'Amboise and Andrea Martin, much fun is to be had. I admit being mystified at the several "bonus" type tracks called "Sing-A-Long" material. This music is so overproduced in the current digital-studio way, the style so transparent and the technique so opaque, that I can't possibly imagine them being sung at home without the help of twelve to fifteen professional singers and full amplification. Do you remember those lyrics? I don't.

The music from this show is great. The amazing vocals of Matthew James Thomas and Patina Miller really carry it over the top. My favorite songs were Magic to Do, Simple Joys, With You, Spread a Little Sunshine, Morning Glow, On the Right Track, Kind of Woman, and Extraordinary. So most of them. This CD will not disappoint, I promise!

This is a recording of the new Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz's 1972 Broadway musical, directed by Bob Fosse. I haven't seen this production but from all accounts, it looks like an imaginative new approach. Great to hear all these songs again and with some additional music not on the original cast recording. My only quibbles - while perhaps it's OK for Schwartz to change some of his lyrics, I'm disappointed that, like many other recent Broadway revivals, the original orchestrations have been changed somewhat. I would suggest that if you don't know PIPPIN, you should also track down the original Broadway cast recording.

I saw the original Broadway production of Pippin and enjoyed it thoroughly. Bob Fosse's direction/choreography seemed indelible and who could surpass Ben Vereen as the Leading Player? Most revivals/films of Fosse projects hew very closely to his sensibility. Well, just from clips on award shows, I knew this was going to be different. The Cast Album shows a completely different style that is still wonderfully calibrated to the book and score, and Patina Miller makes the Leading Player her own. Great vocalists throughout, fabulous energy, and the whole album is one delight after another. I'm not throwing out my OBC album of the original, but the two will exist side by side very happily - or at least I will be very happy to have them.

By the way, the "Rip" feature, which gives me a free digital copy when I buy the CD, is a genius idea and encourages me to buy more albums!
