Dead Man's Chest once again chronicles the adventures of Elizabeth Swann, blacksmith/pirate Will Turner, and of course the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow. Davy Jones, the sea creature hybrid who rules the seas with an iron tentacle, has come back to settle his debt with Jack Sparrow. People who get in depth with the series know that Davy agreed to raise the Black Pearl, then known as the Wicked Wench, in exchange for one hundred years of service after Jack had been captain for thirteen years. Jack, in the process, gets Will involved and subsequently causes him to become part of Davy's barnacle encrusted crew. Elizabeth, of course, sets out to find her betrothed and becomes part of Jack's rag-tag crew in order to find the Dead Man's Chest, which contains the heart of Davy Jones himself, and whoever controls the heart controls the man.
I tend to sympathize with the anti-hero (villain, you say? Bah!), and I can't help but adore Davy Jones. Because of the character or because of Bill Nighy's fantastic acting? A little of both, undoubtedly. Jack's wacky attitude is endearing as usual, and c'mon, Will Turner's swashbuckling, as well as his drive to free his father, is so passionate, it's hard not to swoon a little, even if you, like me, came for the pirates, not for the romance.
Definitely a worthy sequel!
The special features were enjoyable as well. A neat look at a movie of this scale and perhaps one of the last big budget adventure movies that is not all CGI.
The transfers to DVD and Blu ray are excellent, both picture and sound.
Now what is damnably wrong about this whole trilogy is the insistent reiteration of the theme song(s). The constant pounding of the music, is just a annoying as laugh tracks on every mediocre comedy produced for television. Disney, I know you want people to spend money on every aspect of every movie you make or produce, but enough musical dreck is enough!!! Not every movie needs a melodic line running through it. If I desired that much constant music I would go to a concert. By the way, concerts and symphonies give their listeners an intermission, maybe you could try to show some restraint as well.
