First this is not a series. It a a long novel split in three parts each beginning exactly where the previous one stopped. It is also quite expensive, if you sum the three prices together.
Second the plot moves forward but nothing really changes neither in style, writing, characterization, etc.
So, please, if you are interested in my opinion, please read my full review on volume one before this.
This is an entertaining M/M read. Ms Owens can write, she can create narrative tension and the book never drags. She is not only a professional, she is talented.
This is probably why I am so annoyed at her and at this novel.
As as said in my review for the first part, the author is obsessed with domination, S/M and roles in bed and this spoilt much of the fun for me.
Adam and Lucas take the brunt of such single minded obsession, Adam by being essentially unlikeable, contraddicting his many nice words with his less than ethical behaviours and Lucas by appearing a weakling, little more than a doormat prey to instincts that rule over his better judgment. The scenes between the two are painful to say the least.
I wish the author would rewrite this novel entirely, taking away all that dubious consent that mars it to replace it with a gentler teasing, a real seduction, with Adam being a charming rogue and not a manipulative a***le and with Lucas having more (much more) backbone and succumbing to charm and not to devious blackmail.
It would be worth the effort.
Except for the conflict with the bikers' gang that seems put there just to add cheap thrills, the pages that do not show Adam and Lucas together are quite good. This book could have been so much better if Ms Owens had set aside the sledgehammer to work on characterization with her fingertips.
When I read the first book I seriously expected Lucas to fall for Adam, since his first immediate attraction was towards Adam. And since Tyler was so incredibly obnoxious and annoying, I figured events would unfold that would slide Tyler out of the picture and give Adam his happily ever after with his love interest. And then Tricia skillfully introduced tiny hints that Tyler was more than just a pretty jerk and I started to feel for him. By the end of the first book, I actually LIKED him. I also liked all of the supporting characters, which is a rare talent. They feel like real people and now I want them ALL to have their own stories. Kip is so cute! *snuggles him*
What I really appreciate about this story is that nothing is easy for Lucas. He doesn't make any flippant decisions and his actions feel so NORMAL and real. One day he will decide to just "go with the flow" only to second-guess himself and angst over the situation the next. His emotional roller coaster is riveting and although you really want him to just GET ON WITH IT, half the fun is watching him slowly get there on his own. The unfolding backstories of the people around him is brilliantly done and there are so many layers to each one that none of them feel cardboard or contrived. The tension and emotion is palpable in this series and I find myself thinking about the characters at random times, a sure sign that I won't be forgetting this story any time soon.
Anyway, I will stop rambling now because if you've read this book it means you're already hooked like me and are probably stalking, the author to beg her for more. :D I can't wait to see where it goes. I LOVE THESE BOYS. <3
