The history lesson that comes with this trilogy is impressive. Being a history major myself, I am dazzled by the author’s intimate knowledge of all things Catholic, not to mention his military-combat level of expertise.
From the fighting scenes to the shoot-outs, and the love story in the background, this book nicely brings it all together. This author is a deep-thinker displaying talent, wonderful plot construction, and fantastic character development.
You will fall in love with this series if you have even the slightest interest in thrillers that are filled with suspense and take place in several locations around the globe. I highly recommend this one!
I have to admit that I have little to add except to tell you that I am now re-reading the trilogy. It's a roller coaster ride the first time through and there are depths to be plumbed and revelations in which to revel on a second time around. Most of us have busy lives with many demands on our time. A thoroughly good book, a well told tale, is a delight and a bonus to our days.
Don't miss this trilogy.
Finn does a remarkable job building the story, defining the background, and making very clear what is at stake in the first two books. What is most disturbing however is the correlation to the developments in our world today. So read it. It's really good fiction, but even more it is a morality tale for our times. It's all there: Love, War, Hate, Violence, Mercy, Faithfulness, Integrity, Perseverance, Dedication, Delight. And above all the clarity of choice. Who are we? Who will we become? and why does it matter so very much.
The scary thing is how easy you could see it all happen.
A Pius Stand brings together all the plot threads and relationships we have encountered in the previous two books and builds them up towards the spectacular climax. The characters, by now firmly pinned down in our heads, still manage to surprise. The action stops only long enough to build up tension and make us care even more about the outcome, then proceeds with the adrenaline rush of an off- the-rails roller coaster. The political/religious undertones are still definitely present. However, the need for long exposition has already been satisfied in prior volumes, so we get just enough of it here to provide the necessary additional context. The ending is well-rounded between providing closure to individual character arcs and tying up the loose ends on a global scale, thus making it unusually satisfying for a work of this complexity. Highly recommended to political thriller fans looking for a deeper than usual reading experience.
