Editorial Reviews

2010 release by banjo pioneer and visionary, Danny Barnes. The lead single, 'Overdue', features familiar background vocals by fan and friend, Dave Matthews, who is a champion of the project and releasing the John Alagia produced album on his label, ATO Records. Known early on for his work with the seminal Austin alternative country band, the Bad Livers, Barnes has developed a profile for himself as one of the most progressive and genre-bending artists of his craft. With Pizza Box, Barnes spins tales of American life like a latter-day John Steinbeck, wielding banjo and pen with equal effect, and the character of his voice as the perfect mouthpiece to truly bring these songs and stories to life. He tells tales with the wry wit and humor of Garrison Keillor, the lyrical eccentricities and intellect of Randy Newman, performed with the southern twang and swagger of Levon Helm. Barnes combines and blends all of these elements into a style that is uniquely his own.

5 stars for the songs, 1 star for the sonics.

Danny Barnes is a fantastic talent and these are all great songs but, why oh why, has an artist like him fallen into the compression-mania running through pop music these days?

This is the last person I would have expected to put out such a compressed/limited piece of work. As much as I love these songs the loud, boomy mastering, with all of the dynamic range squashed out of it, is tiring to listen to. Maybe he didn't have total control of the mastering decisions but as a performer with a strong traditional music background he should be attuned to more natural sound reproduction. He doesn't need to compete with Metallica after all.

Looks like Danny Barnes found the right partnership in working with the talented John Alagia from Dave Matthew's team in VA. The production touches are just right, the songs are superb and Danny sounds just great. This is probably Barnes' best set of tunes to date. And all of his records are good. If you've come far, don't even think about delaying, buy this right-worthy little bugger now and enjoy it. It's been at the top of my rotation for weeks.

Danny Barnes is essentially country banjo pluker with clever, funny lyrics but his songs are thoroughly modern sounding. All the songs on Pizza Box are well written and produced. The slight electronic/sampler touches are tastefully done.

Recommended.
