Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 Set to the familiar rhythm and cumulative rhyme pattern of "This Is the House That Jack Built," this beginning reader describes the sloppy cheese, spicy sausages, gloppy sauce, and floppy dough that are cooked into a pizza and enjoyed by dozens of mice, much to the cook's great disappointment. However, in order to make the rhyme work, the pizza is cooked in a "tray" rather than a pan, and the sausages are described as "choppy." Also, some of the words are not easy for beginning readers. Still, children will be carried along by the rhythm and the lively, colorful, and somewhat exaggerated illustrations. Kristina Aaronson, Bethel Elementary School Library, VT

From the Inside Flap

Pizza is fun to make. Pizza Pat stretches the floppy dough, puts on the gloppy tomatoes, adds the sloppy sausages, sprinkles on the cheese, and then pops it in the oven. But just before he cuts into his delicious pizza pie, he turns his back for one second--and the pizza disappears! A gang of hungry mice have taken Pat's irresistible creation away for themselves. Kids love pizza, and this cumulative Step 1 book, based on the poem "The House That Jack Built", will whet their appetites for both pizza and books!

PIZZA PAT is one of the most delightful easy-reading books I have found. It is my standard gift for every child from 3 to 7. (And every time I get ready to gift wrap it, I reread it myself and chuckle.)

I got this book when my oldest daughter (who is now 15) was a baby. We have the hardcover edition. I now have 5 kids and another on the way. Each kid has loved this book. it has become well worn and read so many times! I think it's funny how much they all love it! It's a short, easy book.. very cute. Great for first readers or little ones being read to. I am looking online for newer copies because our's is so loved and worn.

I gave this book a rating of 4 stars because I'm not really into poems, but I think it's pretty easy for me to read. I think some people younger than me would love this book if they like poems and if they like pretty easy books. I wish I liked poems because this was pretty good!

My 21/2 year old loves this book. I read it over and over to her. Then she reads the pictures to me over and over. If your young reader likes Step Into Reading books this will be a good one. I read the words with an Italian accent and it is that much better.

My 6 year old son Gib adores this book. It is beautifully illustrated, has wonderful humor, and is a challenging read. I recommend it to all pizza lovers and young readers alike!

When my oldest daugher was two, we read this book at least once a night. My second daughter listened to it from age 2-3 twice a night and even brought to school (and the teacher read it 7 times in a row because of the constant 'again, agains' from the class). Now my three year old son is in love with this book. We read it at least twice a night and thanks to the constant repitition, he 'reads' it too! He loves this book so much he thanks Jesus at prayer time for 'Pizza Pat and the mice'.
We have probably over 400 kids books and I swear this is the most read!

Both my 4-year-old and my 2-year-old love this book. The illustrations are wonderful and really capture Pizza Pat's emotions as he builds his pizza and later loses it to some hungry, albeit naughty, little mice. The descriptions of the ingredients used to make the pizza are silly and giggle-provoking. Even if your kids don't eat pizza, they are sure to enjoy this little book over and over again. I agree with another reviewer: reading the text with an accent definitely adds to the hilarity.

This has been a family favorite since our oldest was 3, now he is sixteen! I would recommend this book for all kids but a great reading book for K-3 because of repetitiveness. It is silly, fun to read with a great ending. We ordered another book because we have 4 kids and couldn't find our original. When the book came in the oldest kids wanted to read the story since it had been a long time. They still chuckled and said that is one of the best books!!! Worth every penny!
