It's one thing to order your pizza from the experts and expect it to turn out perfectly. I have a background in baking, but my pizza making skills are severely lacking. I decided to try making our first efforts in the oven, since you have to crawl before you can run a marathon, right? Homemade dough, sauce, fresh ingredients - I did all of the prep work to a T. I fired up the oven & followed the instructions on pre-heating the stone, but soon discovered that there's a huge learning curve between pizza-eating connoisseur and pizza making expert.
We assembled my wife's pizza first. It looked like a work of art on our floured island - until I attempted to use the peel to load it onto the hot stone. It looked more like a Rorschach test slide after that. First lesson: flour (or cornmeal) the peel & assemble the pizza on it immediately prior to cooking. While hers wasn't pretty, it was pretty tasty.
I built my pizza next. In retrospect, I should've guinea-pigged mine first & did hers second. There's no better teacher than experience, in my opinion. Mine looked better and the crust turned out amazing with the stone! But several of my ingredients ended up burnt onto the back of the oven.
A couple of more lessons to impart to my fellow pizza connoisseurs: smaller is better & don't overload the ingredients until you get a feel for working with raw dough. Make sure you use a baker's peel to transfer to the pre-heated stone. Seriously worth the investment!
created, what in my opinion is, the best pizza stone out there. It is solid and substantial. The stone allows for the heat to make the pizza
crispy on the bottom and yet delicious and doughy (for those times that you choose to make a thicker crust) in the middle. That's the beauty of it.
If you like to make your own professional-style pizza without having to go out or if you like to create your own recipes then you will love this. It's ready to use right out of the box and once you're done using it, it's very easy to clean. I now prefer to make my own pizzas rather than to go out to a restaurant. Of course, I recommend that you use high quality ingredients such as buffalo mozzarella and that you make your own dough.
I ordered mine and it arrived a day later. I have included a picture of the box (which is actually a pizza box--great idea) and a picture of my hand on the stone so that you get an idea of how big it really is. I haven't seen pizza stone for home use that's this big!
It is a pretty big size which I like and it fits well into my oven - see image. I like the fact that it has heat spirals designed to heat faster and evenly (see image, note that the stone is turned upside down in my oven just to show off the spirals). It works really well and everything I have made on it so far has come out great! It works just as well as my round baking stone and keeps the crust or cookies from burning even if left in a few extra minutes.
I love how evenly stones bake your food! I even use this stone for heating up leftovers in the oven because it heats them up so nicely. It is easy to clean - just wipe off with a wet washcloth. The only reason that I give this a 4 stars is because it is really heavy. This is good in the fact that you know it is a better quality stone, but it is something you should know as it is a bit hard to handle. Otherwise, I recommend this baking stone.
