A masterpiece in historical writing. Every statement backed up by one, some times several, references. That's how I like it. I don't have to take anyone's word for anything. You consider some things doubtful, go check them out! As opposed to Jimmy Carter's 'Israel - Peace not Apartheid' a blatant piece of propaganda, a collection of baseless opinions, parading as historical writing without a single reference. Also, Prime Minister Netanyahu gives contrarian views their due. He does not shove them under the rug - he discusses them, and does not care whom he discredits in the process, and frequently shows the reader why they could not possibly be correct.
The powers assembled at the Treaties of San Remo and Sevres (1920) chraged with distributing the districts that once comprised the Ottoman Empire, had designated Palestine the place for a Jewish Homeland. The British were charged by the League of Nations with the administration of Palestine, as a 'Mandate', to facilitate the immigration of persecuted Jews, and the settlement of the land by the Jews. Instead, Mr. Churchill, in his inimitable arrogance, gave away what was not his to give, 78% of the territory that comprised Palestine to the Hashemite Emir Abdullah as Transjordania, today's Jordan. Someone would do that in the private sector, he would go to jail. But not in politics. The saying is: might does not make right. Which is true; but people no longer care about what is right.
Might is what makes things happen; what shapes the destinies of nations - right or wrong. This book is a page turner and a must-read for anyone who truly wants to understand the seemingly endless quarrels in the Middle East.
Should be required reading for the U.S. State Department!
