The Place I Belong

About the Story: Hannah Linden, a veterinarian has buried herself in a little small town in West Virginia, far from her professional woes and her ex-fiancé in Boston. She considered herself lucky to find someone who would hire her after she told them what happened in her previous job. Something else Hannah hadn’t expected, is her growing love for the town, its people and her patients.

She becomes emotionally touched with Matt, a young teenager who spent a day with her at the clinic learning how important animals are in people’s lives. Hannah finds Matt’s father complex and charming – someone she needs to stay away from to keep her heart intact.

Adam Bosch, Matt’s father and world-renowned chef, when learns of Matt’s existence cannot come to grips with the idea of being a father—he would destroy anyone close to him. Adam has issues he struggles with daily and knows he must keep a distance from people. He’s an alcoholic and has stayed away from the bottle for nine years, but when he drinks he's afraid that he would be abusive as his father was. Adam convinced himself he can’t be a father nor could he get married. What would he do to his wife or child? Adam fills his life with cooking and has a restaurant in Sanctuary that people fly in by helicopter to dine. That’s his life and he doesn’t need more, but when he meets Hannah, things begin to change.

When Hannah helped Adam with his troubled son he was drawn to her physically and emotionally. She was light to his dark. And he couldn’t stay away.

My Thoughts: This story had three things going for it that I really liked.

The setting is in a small town up in the mountains.

This is a story about a boy who lost his Mom and a Dad who didn't even know he existed. The Dad owns the restaurant The Aerie and is dealing with issues himself when a son is thrown into the mix. When Adam meets Matt for the first time, he doesn't know anything about being a Dad. Adam is a quiet man who keeps his emotions under check until he meets Hannah, the Vet. Hannah treats Trace, Adams dog. Her vet business leads them to Matt's whisper pony. This is a great, heartwarming story with lots of emotions all over the place. Without giving too much away, I would recommend this and any other Nancy Herkness book.

Wonderful story and great writing. I want to commend the author on the way she wrote about the elderly lady and her very old dog. It is a hard subject and it was written with feeling and heart. Hannah is a Vet, taking care of large and small animals; Adam is the man she loves but is filled with guilt and reminders of his angry father. It seems to be the end of a series and I've enjoyed all three books. I do have to admit to a few tears here and there but then, doesn't that make for great writing. Thanks for an amazing story.

I'm a horse lover, and so this series caught my eye. I decided to try it and have to say, Nancy Herkness's Whisper Horse novels are really good. The characters are all people I would love to know and hang out with, the romance is just right (not too in your face, believable, charming as well as hot). More please!

Nancy Herkness outdid herself with this latest addition to her Whisper Horse series. She handled the serious issue of alcoholism & the death of a parent with compassion. The interaction between Hannah and Matt made me laugh and had a very realistic touch to it. The entire novel seemed true to life. Adam & Hannah's connection could be felt throughout & had me riding the emotions along with the characters. Being able to relate to the characters & their daily struggles/triumphs, in my mind, is the mark of a very talented writer. My favorite in this series so far. Definitely worth reading, again and again. Hope we get much more in this series from this very talented writer.

This novel follows in the path of the previous books in this series, maintaining the same level of quality. Very well written, full of emotion and issues that are finally resolved as you would hope. I have all of these books & if she writes another in this series, will purchase that one too. Very good read. As a horse lover, I like that there's a horse that plays a key role. These books are not just for horse lovers, though, as the plot will capture your interest if you like horses or not.

Hannah, a veterinarian, has moved to a small town to escape a scandal in Chicago. She meets Adam, a nationally known chef who has demons of his own. He has recently become a father to a 13 year old son that he had never been aware of. Because he is a recovering alcoholic, he feels that he is unfit to be a good parent to the boy. An ailing old pony helps to bond the three of them in a very charming way.

Although I really do like this story and the way that Ms Herkness portrays the daily struggle of recovering alcoholics, I was totally surprised to find that Hannah is still drinking around Adam. True, he is around alcohol daily in his job, but as the ex of an alcoholic I know that it is much easier for an addict when he is supported by those around him. Like many ex-smokers who say " Go ahead and smoke, it won't bother me," it really does set off a craving. Even if he insisted that she drink, it would have been more generous of her to have refused.

Sexual situations in this book may offend some readers.
