"A Place Far Away" is a barely-fictionalized story about a young village girl from rural Armenia who is tricked into agreeing to pursuing a "modeling job" in "Greece" and is actually forced into a life of prostitution outside of Armenia, primarily in Dubai. This is clearly a fictionalized but sadly true story that is well-told and riveting. I won't go into the plot here, other than to say, it's a troubling subject but is well-handled, thought-provoking, emotional, and truly well-done.
While the story is interesting in itself, the third dimension that comes into the book--and which lends "A Place Far Away" its unexpected richness (which I was not expecting)--are the social observations scattered throughout the book, the call to activism, and the weaving of strands of Armenian history into the narrative to create context and a historical framework. Zanoyan's social commentary throughout the book is subtle but unmistakable, and it's clear he's writing from the experience of a keen observer with great insights into the people and issues of the Republic of Armenia. This is a very rich novel with something urgent on its mind that needs to be said.
Hands-down, "A Place Far Away" is the single best book of the many I've read to this point in 2013. Only time will tell, but I do believe Zanoyan's great book is going to be remembered as a significant contribution to Armenian literature.
I'd also like to thank him for donating part of his earnings from this book to FIGHT against Human Trafficking and HELP the survivors - I admire him for that!
As for the book itself, I must say - what a captivating and poetic read!
Beautifully written, the story is heart-wrenching and realistic. It takes the readers to the world of human greed and corruption, cruelty and violence. At times it makes you want to cry…
But despite all the darkness and despair, LOVE and HOPE not only resist and survive, they conquer at the end, bringing the light at the end of the tunnel.
I wish Vahan a great success with his book A Place Far Away and look forward to reading some more of his work.
All proceeds go to support the cause! If you want to help with eliminating the incidence of sex and human trafficking, purchasing the book is a great start (as you are making a donation) and finishing it will urge you to become an ally! Highly recommend it and would suggest it as a meaningful and socially conscious gift to others. The best way to end a problem is increasing awareness and involvement and that would be a great way to begin.
