- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSpoiler alert: Dorothy Parker's ashes are buried in Baltimore. I think she would love knowing this was her final resting place, a place unlike any other major city on the east coast, just as Parker was unlike any other writer. I know of few cities where creativity and originality have not been suffocated by endless gentrification, but Baltimore has thankfully bucked this trend. Its art and food scenes will reawaken your senses and its sense of community will welcome you more than your own childhood block does.
Allison Robicelli does an excellent job in her guide to Charm City. She manages to find the thriving spirit of the land and relays her surprising stories in a most entertaining style. I've visited the submarines in the Inner Harbor, but did not know that one does sleepovers. I'd been to the B&O Railroad more than once, and did not know about the bridge or that I could get tickets there for a ride over it. If you plan on going anywhere near this wonderful city, I suggest you grab this book before getting on that cruise ship or finding a day or two before boarding Amtrak to DC. This city and this book should not be overlooked.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseLiving in Baltimore, I know this place is so chock full of history it is hard to take it all in. It also has more than its fair share of bohemians, weirdos, oddities and eccentricities, making things even harder. No one book is going to get it all in, especially given people’s wildly different interests. Fortunately, some books give more than their share and 111 PLACES IN BALTIMORE THAT YOU MUST NOT MISS is an example of one.
Even having lived here for a number of years, I was still surprised at how many sights and how many historical or interesting locales there were about which I had not known. Some of these things are big, some small, and some a mixture of the two. One example of many is the USS Torsk, a submarine in the Inner Harbor that is hard to miss. But I sure would not have known it fired the last torpedo of World War II had I not read it here.
Bottom line, although it might sound like a cliché, in this case it really is true that this book is well worthwhile both for the visitor and for the resident. I will say it piqued my interest enough that I bought another book in this series immediately upon finishing it, the one for New Orleans. No doubt that one will be a particular blast.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe writing is truly excellent and the photographs are simply gorgeous. The book even feels good in your hands! My daughter asked if there was a real crab on the cover, that's how stunning it is. It's rich with history, wonderful descriptions of community and places to share food with loved ones. It's funny and just perfect! I never leave reviews but this one is a must! Go get it and then get it for those you love.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchasePut the tourist pamphlets away! If you'd like to view Baltimore the way locals do~ this is the book you want! One of the impossible tasks is to make a city guide funny AND interesting. Allison Robicelli has accomplished this! 111 Places will prove indispensable to visitors and locals alike. Taking this book with me on my next trip! And from the looks of things~ I should definitely show up hungry!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe book has a lot of ideas but many are a bit out there. It surprisingly doesn't have some of the bigger attractions that could replace many of the attractions that don’t warrant a visit to.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAs a native Balti-moron, but recent transplant to South Carolina, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It brought back some great memories for me. So many familiar places and a few things I'd never heard of. I'm going to have a busy first visit back to my old home town trying to see the new things. Thank you Allison for a really great book about my Baltimore!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm a transplant to Baltimore and have been here for over 20 years. The Forward of the book encapsulates all of my thoughts about why I love this city. This book gave me some nuggets of info and history about places I've been to before, and introduced me to some places that I can't wait to visit. Required for anyone looking to really get to know and explore Baltimore.
