100 Places in Cuba Every Woman Should Go Paperback – July 31, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
The 100 places profiled in this book are the result of decades of travel, research, and living in Cuba by a US journalist with uncommon access, ensuring travelers incomparable experiences. Much more than a prescriptive list, these narratives incorporate adventures and mishaps, insider opinion, slang, gossip, and conversations with Cubans during a historic shift which saw Soviet support evaporate, Fidel Castro take his final bow, economic reforms whiffing suspiciously of capitalism, and quasi-normalization with the United States. From exclusive interviews with prestigious Cubans to tales from intrepid travelers, these stories decipher the mysteries of Cuba while describing the country’s most alluring sites, sounds, and off-the-beaten track locales.
Author Conner Gorry has spent decades writing guidebooks for Lonely Planet (Cuba included), reporting from post-disaster situations, and covering Cuban life from the inside for a variety of international publications. Her expertise in parsing Cuban machismo and gender politics, analyzing the role and impact of Cuban women, and ferreting out the best places for women traveling solo or with children enriches the book. She first visited Cuba in 1993 and has been permanently based in Havana since 2002 where she reports on everything from clinical trials to questionable fashion. She has written several books about Cuba and founded the island’s only English-language bookstore, Cuba Libro, in 2013; most of her explorations for 100 Places in Cuba Every Woman Should Go were made on a 1946 Harley-Davidson, leading one observer to say: ‘Conner’s Cuba is where Shakespeare and Company meets Easy Rider.”

About the author

Author Conner Gorry has spent decades writing guidebooks for Lonely Planet, (Cuba included), reporting from post-disaster situations, and covering Cuban life from the inside for a variety of international publications. She first visited Cuba in 1993 and has been permanently based and officially accredited as a journalist in Havana since 2002 where she reports on everything from clinical trials to questionable fashion.
She has written several books about Cuba and founded the island’s only English-language bookstore/cafe, Cuba Libro, in 2013; most of her explorations for her recent book, 100 Places in Cuba Every Woman Should Go (2018; Traveler’s Tales), were made on a 1946 Harley-Davidson, leading one observer to say: ‘Conner’s Cuba is where Shakespeare and Company meets Easy Rider.” Indeed, she has traveled nearly 5,000 miles across the island on two wheels – necessary field research for her book Cuban Harleys, Mi Amor, (2014; Backroad Diaries) with photographs by Max Cucchi.
She writes about contemporary life in Cuba on her blog Here is Havana (www.hereishavana.com) and recently published her first collection of prose, poetry and rants TWATC.

I was very disappointed. I went by the title vs doing more research before spending $15 on a novel about Cuba. No pics of the locations discussed just detailed storylike description.

I got this book from a friend before my trip to Cuba last winter. It proved to still be up to date when I got there. The book described places I didn't find in other Cuba guides, adding anecdotes from her adventures there. Also tips on culture, avoiding hassles etc.
Author is American but has lived in Cuba for many years and clearly knows it inside out. Definitely recommend it.
I have ventured outside of Havana during my eight-year love affair with this unique city and have come to the conclusion that nothing rivals the natural beauty and architectural variety in Cuba. This year, I decided to take time to fully explore the country and was thrilled when I discovered Conner Gorry’s newest book, One hundred Places in Cuba Every Woman should Go. Conner introduces her reader to all of the hidden gems that are largely ignored by travelers visiting this magical island. Her prose sing on every page reflecting the true nature of Cuba and its beautiful people. It is a small book that can be read during a lazy afternoon, but I wanted to savour every new place she introduced so I took my time. Conner covers cities, beaches, mountains, wilderness, and everything in between. In Appendix 1, Conner offers all of the necessary information one needs to navigate this perplexing country well. Cuba is complicated but that is what makes it so exciting. The book closes with Appendix 2 – a list of online resources that are extremely useful. When I am in Havana, I often stop by Conner’s café, Café Libro for local information because Conner is a font of knowledge. Now I can simply carry this book with me.
I highly recommend One Hundred Places in Cuba Every Woman Should Go to men and women alike. However, due to the #Metoo Movement and the overall safety of women in our present world, Conner expressly wants her female readers to know that Cuba is safe and welcoming. As a female who travels alone to Cuba, I agree with Conner wholeheartedly and will use this travel bible often until it is dog-eared with love.
I am a flight attendant and I do not want to be in the crowds of my passengers. I want to be eating and dancing and riding motorcycles with the locals. I want to be in the know. I want to feel the energy of Cuba. I do not want to miss anything.
Will I highly recommend this book. Like the author said.... it is not the destination but the journey to experience it all on the way.
In fact, you do not even have to get on an airplane. I find the book takes you away right in the comfort of your airplane seat wherever you are going.
I have been to Cuba 2x this past year. But I was not in the know. Now I have it all in front of me. I am sure I will see Cuba through a different set of eyes... and with a little knowledge of history and customs that I learned from reading the book. I love Cuba. And this book. If you do not buy this book... you are not going to get all that you could out of the trip. And... do not do the cruise ships. Enjoy the Cuba hospitality. That is living life to the fullest.

This is a fantastic guide to a country that holds so many pleasures, so many life-changing experiences, to miss it would just be a damn shame. Gorry's writing is down-to-earth, well-researched and impeccable. And what's more, she just nails it. Cuba is a must if you crave total immersion tourism. Cuba has an authenticity I haven't seen anywhere else on the planet. Going there will change your life. Gorry lays down the low-down on what to do and see there. A fantastic read and utterly indispensable. Can't recommend it enough.
