Editorial Reviews

Review

“Thaao Penghlis combines the best of 3 worlds: His Greek origin gave him the spirit of Ulysses and the wisdom to enjoy the journey. His Australian upbringing graced him with a deep and philosophical sense of humor, and his life and work as an actor in [the] United States and especially in Los Angeles led him to a brilliant career and a better knowledge of himself and the demanding art of acting. His book is as exciting as his life and leaves us with a positive feeling of how many things we can achieve when we dare to follow our dreams. I enjoyed every page.” —Los Angeles Greek consul

“You expect one thing, and you get an antipodean novel. I love Thaao’s stories. His photographs alone describe his life. It’s a truthful, beautiful memoir told by a great adventurer, a fabulous chef, and a gorgeous Greek. He tells it all. It’s a ‘you can’t put it down’ biography.” —Joanna Cassidy, actress

“Thaao Penghlis is a true renaissance man. Places is intriguing, informative and an absolute page turner.” —Doris Roberts, actress, Everybody Loves Raymond

Places is a beautiful, revealing, enlightening, and rare book. Unflinchingly truthful and entertaining, it pulls you into the undertow of the truly amazing journey Thaao has lived. For anyone who has felt alone, been touched by kismet and reached for the stars it is a must read! All actors can learn from the raw and revealing truths shared by one of my favorite actors that I’ve directed.” —Howie Deutch, director

PLACES: THE JOURNEY OF MY DAYS, MY LIVES is in three sections – all of them capturing a different aspect of Thaao Penghlis’ career and life.

PART ONE: ALONG THE PATH has Old Hollywood style glamour to it, even from the very beginning when a legendary clairvoyant tells Thaao that he was destined to move to America and become an actor. I almost felt like I was watching a classic black-and-white movie, imagining Thaao hungry in NYC; studying art, acting and metaphysics; rubbing shoulders with Claudette Colbert, Jackie Kennedy, Robert Redford, John Gielgud, Charlton Heston, Sal Mineo, Omar Sharif and Shirley Maclaine…to name just a few celebrities; and finally getting work in film and television…which was a Hollywood roller coaster of ups and downs. We also get a sense of Thaao, the actor – strengthening in his work as he learns with his teacher and mentor…later his dear friend, Milton Katselas.

PART TWO: DODGING BULLETS. Being a long-term Days of Our Lives watcher, it is hard for me to read this chapter and be objective. I can vaguely remember Thaao’s first episode on the show. By the time, his “twin” Andre Dimera came along – I was completely hooked on the character – all through the romances...all through the deceptions and adventures of what it was to be a “Dimera”. When “Tony” was killed off in the mid-90s, I walked too. When Thaao was asked back to DAYS in 2002, I started watching again. I did not care if “Tony” or “Andre” was romantic, evil, good or psycho. Thaao always had me riveted to the screen because he never phoned it in like so many of the other soap opera actors do. So it has always been a mystery to me why James E. Reilly and later Gary Tomlin kept killing off the character.

This is a very spiritual man who writes about his journeys to parts of the world I would not visit personally. I learned a lot of history I had never heard before and have a new respect for someone I only thought of as an actor. There is much more to him than that.

An incredibly journey through not just one place in time, but several places in several different planes of time, The book reads something of a Clive Cussler "Dirk Pitt" adventure, but Penghlis quickly reminds you that he's no a fictional character. Still, the tenacity... the precociousness that Thaao will stare down an armed military man leave you equally rooting for him and wondering what he is thinking, There's even a side chapter devoted to Dame Edna Everage just to make the book even more original. A solid read from the first page... that inevitably will leave you wanting the sequel

Although I wasn't in the mood for a travel book, I was mildly curious about Thaao Penghlis because I'd watched him on Days Of Our Lives many years ago. So I downloaded the sample and by the end of reading the sample I was hooked and bought the book. I was pleasantly surprised that the book was so well-written and enjoyable. I'm glad I read it.

From the first few words of this wonderful first book from Thaao Penghlis, you know that you are in for an incredible ride. The honesty and generosity of spirit are evidenced in the opening chapters when the love of family and friends shines through with a passion only matched by a love of learning, traveling and absorbing far off places most of us will only dream of seeing one day.
A breezy page turner indeed by one of the leading soap opera actors of our time...whether you loved to hate him as Tony/Andre Dimera or the iconic(triumphant recent return) Victor Cassadine, the depth of character study here, will introduce you to and afford a rare glimpse into a personality shaped by a striving of wanting always to better himself and the people around him. A man in tune with his nature and the business that he is in, he manages to take things in stride at the same time that he is fighting against the normal and the traditional of his multi-national heritage. A story of such humble proportions from existing on the bare minimum required for human existence to cutting public Tulips just to make a good impression to taking advice and learning from pros around him until the ultimate achievement of becoming the film and television star we know and love today. Always living and thinking outside the box, he takes us on a spiritual and enlightened journey that most of us should, but few of us will ever take.
This book will keep you turning pages just to find out where and what envelope he will push next...a lovely and fascinating mixture of family love, Days of Our Lives tidbits and illuminated History and Geography lessons, just a highly recommended first outing for a much respected personage...a definite "must read".
