The second part of the series is more beautiful, sweeter and more wonderful.
Very basic gameplay, nothing difficult about it, other than I think it needs a patch or two, as followers tend to get stuck, but I’m sure they’ll fix it, not a game breaker.
Problem is, most great games if you get stuck, you keep trying and trying until you get through. With this however, I calmly put the controller and just said “eh”.
It’s also very much a one and done, but it’s also a great story, which the way the game is designed you can’t run around taking everyone out with followers who can’t defend themselves.
Reminds me a lot of the game Vampyr, but there’s no safe place in this story, there’s no resting it’s go go go, which is a nice change.
Haven’t finished it yet, but unless the rats turn into humans or the story gets really crazy, I’m sure it’ll be fine. Good game great story, don’t expect to be pressing buttons for combos, though.
Story: You are in the 1300's in France trying to survive the Black Plague, you have to evade Renegade Knights, swarms of Plague Rats, Panicking Survivors, and even simply becoming a victim of the Plague Itself. (SPOILERS NEXT) You will guide Amicia and Hugo (the children of House De Rune) as you master the arts of Alchemy (This is the Dark Ages). The story takes place over the course of a year and the seasons have more than a cosmetic effect on the environment.
Mechanics (CONTAINS SPOILERS): 3rd person action adventure with very deep stealth elements. Patrols of Inquisition Soldiers, English Invaders, & at least 1 very disturbed Crusader carry torches and lanterns to hunt you down as well as ward off the swarms of rats. Shadows conceal you but also invite the swarms, with a heavy focus on puzzle solving. Your tools include torches, thrown apparatuses, a sling for improved power and range (at the cost of being noisy) and various potions concocted through alchemy for various effects, including everything from sleeping potions to explosives. You will need to forage & scavenge for ingredients such as Salt, Sulfur, & Alchohol. You will upgrade your equipment such as your Sling's power & reload speed (in a holster upgrade skill tree) as well as your overall capacity for the number of ready potions (ammo). You will recruit a band of survivors with skills to complement your lack thereof, they will include an apprentice alchemist (the mage) a set of twin rogues (pick-locks and sniper) and an apprentice blacksmith (fighter). You will need all these skills and your fellow survivors to beat this game.
The history is pretty good too, it feels fresh. It took me around 15-16 hours to complete all chievos (and had to use a guide to find some collectibles I was missing on my first run) so it feels like a fair amount of content for 40 bucks.
