A Plague Upon Our House: My Fight at the Trump White House to Stop COVID from Destroying America Kindle Edition
What really happened behind the scenes at the Trump White House during the COVID pandemic?
When Dr. Scott W. Atlas was tapped by Donald Trump to join his COVID Task Force, he was immediately thrust into a maelstrom of scientific disputes, policy debates, raging egos, politically motivated lies, and cynical media manipulation. Numerous myths and distortions surround the Trump Administration’s handling of the crisis, and many pressing questions remain unanswered. Did the Trump team really bungle the response to the pandemic? Were the right decisions made about travel restrictions, lockdowns, and mask mandates? Are Drs. Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx competent medical experts or timeserving bureaucrats? Did half a million people really die unnecessarily because of Trump’s incompetence?
So far no trusted figure has emerged who can tell the story straight—until now. In this unfiltered insider account, Dr. Scott Atlas brings us directly into the White House, describes the key players in the crisis, and assigns credit and blame where it is deserved.
The book includes shocking evaluations of the Task Force members’ limited knowledge and grasp of the science of COVID and details heated discussions with Task Force members, including all of the most controversial episodes that dominated headlines for weeks. Dr. Atlas tells the truth about the science and documents the media’s relentless campaign to suffocate it, which included canceled interviews, journalists’ off-camera hostility in White House briefings, and intentional distortion of facts. He also provides an inside account of the delays and timelines involving vaccines and other treatments, evaluates the impact of the lockdowns on American public health, and indicts the relentless war on truth waged by Big Business and Big Tech.
No other book contains these revelations. Millions of people who trust Dr. Atlas will want to read this dramatic account of what really went on behind the scenes in the White House during the greatest public health crisis of the 21st century.

Having said that, it is also shocking to read the disastrous food habits of Dr. Scott Atlas, in the middle of a would-be pandemic where 2/3rds of deaths have 6+ comorbidities, and closer to 95% have at least 4 comorbidities. All of the comorbidities are induced by diet and lifestyle, and are perfectly preventable with diet and lifestyle. With a lifestyle medicine approach to public health, those "comorbidities" can all be prevented or reversed, and a whole foods, plant-based diet would be the first step and effectively 80% of the work.
Finally, this book still gives the benefit of the doubt to the vaccines. That is really a separate story.
Dr. Scott Atlas was hired by the Trump Administration to be a policy advisor and to examine the ramifications of any directives the Task Force suggested. His expectations seemed to be that everyone would work together, being that COVID was health danger and a priority for the United States as well as the world. Dr. Atlas was shocked to see that this was not the case. Worse, there was no logical examination of the facts, and thus the Task Force worked against the vision of President Trump but also ignored the data which would have offered a clear path to follow in order to lower the number of cases and thus protect American citizens.
The author will identify all the issues that kept the Task Force from doing the best job it could. This includes identifying the people who controlled the final message coming out of the White House. Even President Trump was not effective in some areas.
What bothered me most was the approach Dr. Atlas took toward the media. He mentioned numerous times that he could not understand why the press was so brutal, and I was happy to see he corrected that by addressing the partisan viewpoints and outright lies when his worked was maligned or misrepresented. For me, it filled in some of the blanks that I wasn’t aware of and confirmed other facts that I had deduced. Even now, there continue to be egregious errors in the way the pandemic is being handled as people like Dr. Fauci refuse to examine the facts and use common sense and logic to come up with a successful plan. As Dr. Atlas states, we will never eradicate the virus but we can take great strides in protecting our citizens and ensure the solutions developed do not make the situation worse. Five stars.

Atlas was a voice of science and reason but was unfortunately overwhelmed and, well, over ruled due to political machinations. There was no room for truth and integrity. Or science and data for that matter.
It was all pseudoscientific voodoo nonsense. From social distancing to masking.
Atlas served his country well and was ain important voice among those who refused to consider overall public health. Up to 2020, every measure undertaken was not recommended. All of a sudden, it became the prevailing method. Why? What happened? This needs to be investigated.
And if you think lessons were learned think again. My fear is the same people who ushered in disastrous restrictions are retooling and figuring ways to be even more draconian next time out. The hammer wasn't heavy enough in 2020 in their minds.
I have no idea how to defend against this other than to be aware and to strengthen our laws protecting civil liberties. The rise of the medical technocrat is upon us.
Highly recommended book.
To me the unquestionable value of this book is describing in depth the cast of characters (mainly villains and idiots) who ran the U.S. government's response to the corona pandemic. Sadly, in telling this story, it will also depress you with how little an actual expert like Dr. Atlas could do to right things once the train was off the rails.
You see how the interplay between an angry, malevolent, media and an administration desperate to salvage a re-election led to disastrous decisions, such as: failing to sideline the Birxs and Faucis of the world; and entrusting the detail work on the pandemic to a vice president who either would not or could not keep his Task Force's messaging and policy consistent with the president's policy.
When you see up close what a tire fire the whole thing was—from the perspective of someone who seems at once loyal, sober, and fair-minded—you realize that much of the nightmare we are still living through more than a year later isn't part of any grand conspiracy. It traces back to the period of March 2020-November 2020 and the repeated decision, made day after day and month after month, to entrust massive powers to "hard-working" yet mediocre career bureaucrat "doctors" who were all-in on lockdowns from day 1, and whose primary skill is in stage managing character assassinations through a compliant D.C. media.
This book resonated with what I have felt throughout this pandemic. The oppressive measures are punishing for so many leading to the conclusion that the cure is worse than the disease which Dr. Scott Atlas does touch on.
He shares with us with great passion his experiences during what was almost a four-month term as a health policy advisor to President Trump in the last segment of his presidency. Atlas found himself stymied despite all his hard data evidence supporting his stance to say lockdowns and facemasks, in particular, flew in the face of what many of the leading voices in scientific circles were saying as far as the efficacy of lockdowns including school closures, restrictions on movement and masking. He came to find that the task force was driven by two career medical bureaucrats in the names of Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx. It eventually came to his attention that one compelling reason why alternative views other than the dominant prevailing narrative is that no one wanted to upset or offend these two drivers of the alarmist policies Americans have had to endure.
President Trump promoted opening society and aimed for focused protection. The opposition was vociferously vitriolic practically speaking toward anything Trump attempted to put forward according to Atlas. The hostility toward the former president was so palpably in favour of a manipulation of the dominant narrative controlled by a powerful coalition of elites in politics, academia, media and Big Tech. They have attempted to control the masses through their fear by putting out context free scary numbers and discrediting the call to end the draconian lockdown policies and demonizing those calling for focused protection and reopening.
In a parting thought, I wish Atlas had included an index and a bibliography with his treatise although he did highlight studies and names of prominent scientists who are on board with his stance. I believe he could have gone further with regard to the question of the ostensible necessity of vaccines for those at very low risk especially for the very high rate of recovery from covid19, but perhaps that would have taken the text in whole other direction.
