I have never been a huge paradise lost fan but after picking up the plague within I might have to reconsider that. After hearing no hope in sight which wonderfully combines death growls and clean vocals with heavy riffs and the heaviness of beneath broken earth as well as the positive reviews online I decided to make the plague within my next metal purchase. As of right now the plague within is one of my favorite releases this year. With a healthy mix of different tempos throughout the album everything from a doom crawl to the more upbeat tempo of cry out another one of my favorite songs to the great clean vocals and death growls I find it all works very well and gives the album great variety. So many songs could be considered highlights no hope in sight, sacrifice the flame, an eternity of lies and return to the sun not that there is really a weak song on the disc. The plague within is a shinning example of doom and a healthy dose of death metal a lot of it the vocals done right. I can not see any reason a fan of heavy and varied metal would not like the plague within.

My disclosure is that I'm not a long-time Paradise Lost fan. I've been listening to them for about 4 years now and really fell in love with their albums Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us and Tragic Idol. I'm not the biggest fan of the singing style of their old albums (though I do like the music) and The Plague Within combines the old with the new and I can appreciate that...especially since the music is downright amazing, I just can't get into the singing style...and this is coming from a metal head who listens to everything from Suicide Silence to Pantera to Alice in Chains. So, my 4 stars represent my opinion that this is a good album and is most definitely worth owning if you are a Paradise Lost fan.

It's a long time since I regularly found some new album so captivating I kept exploring it for weeks and then pick it out of the shelf over the next months to renew the initial experience. Even bands whose new releases used to have that effect on me, like Opeth, Dream Theater and My dying bride has mostly stopped doing it since a few albums back. I guess this is the first albumhaing the mentioned effect on me since 4-5 years.

Musically, I don't agree to all those claims that PL now return to their roots. They're much too experienced now to be reduced to standards of those early efforts. I think this album reflects alot of influence from others, from fellow Doom-Metallers My dying Bride (their late 90s / early 00s output) and occational black metal elements, something which is new in their reportoire.

After last two studio albums, and "Tragic Illusion 25" it was not hard to see that the band is moving towards their formative years with their sound. With "Paradise Lost" they already revisited "Draconian Times", "In Requiem" was modern analogue of "Icon" and both "Tragic Idol" and "Faith Divides Us..." was somewhere in between "Icon" and "Shades Of God" in my book. And, yes, since 2005 I have been really happy with all of their output. However, style of both previous studio albums was rather similar, and it was obvious moment to change the direction. The decision to reintroduce Nick's growl seemed rather risky -despite the fact, that I absolutely love "Gothic", stepping into the same river (or should one say - returning to one's roots) is not so easy. However, the outcome absolutely exceeded all my expectations. Mostly because the guys have wisely decided to melt together best from both worlds - harshness and haunting melodies of death/doom period, and the beauty and melancholy of their goth-metal period. Nick's growl may not be as vitriolic as it used to be in 1991, but it works really well with these particular melodies, and his clean vocals are just as good as always.
There are also changes to the music itself - in some songs ("Terminal", "Flesh from Bone") one is treated with some of the fastest and heaviest material from Paradise Lost ever, and there are slight touches of early doomsters, such as early Cathedral in "Beneath Broken Earth". However, the most important is the fact, that guys have not tried to just became as heavy and harsh as possible, but still did a good job on melodies.

Plague Within is pretty kick ass! After listening to the CD 3 times now, I wanted to truly give it most marinating time before making a review. The opening track sets a simple and warm presence as the album builds on its traditional doom contrast. Slow and dark. This album also includes full drums by Adrian Erlandsson.
I began my PL journey in 2000 when I stumbled on "Isolate" after looking for King Diamond videos on Road Runner Records.com. From there I began with the current and listened to the past records.. Absolutely loved them all! So building up through stages and years of music development from a band thats been around for over 20 years.. It's hard to stamp any kind of s***ty review on them..especially when the band had flirted with genres from Heavy Metal, Doom to Classical and Electronica. This album fills a lot of the bands classic doom sound as well as a new matured one? either way... A great CD!
