To my dismay, she picked up the top cone then dropped it which caused a loud noise that startled her. She wouldn't go anywhere near it after that and cried when I put her near it to get her to play with it. So, I didn't force the issue and just left it around within her eye sight. She would pass by and stare at it from distance with curiosity but move on to other toys (as well as empty water bottle, tube of lotion, my iphone and pushing around kitchen chair - do we need to buy toys?). It took a few weeks but one day I went in to my room to grab something then heard some banging noise when I ran back she took the toy apart and was holding two rings in each of her hand and banging it together. Now, she it constantly playing with it. Taking it apart, banging, sucking, rolling~ I can't wait until she actually put it back together! Love seeing them grow and figure things out!
In general, I really cannot say enough about Plan Toys - definitely some of the best quality wooden toys commercially available. We have the Cone Sorting, the pounding bench, the stacking tree (the two top pieces of the tree are still a choking hazard for my 11 mo old, so they are in a drawer for later), and the xylophone.
I'm amazed at how wonderfully and creatively my little guy plays with this! He is already trying to stack - but he also uses this toy in conjunction with our other plan toys in very creative ways. A lot of the long pieces in the Plan Toys sets are the same diameter, and semi interchangable. He threads tree pieces on the pounding bench hammer handle, puts tree pieces in the pounding bench holes, puts parts of the stacking cone on the tree trunk. We also spin pieces like tops on the table, or swivel them threaded on a stick for him, which he is fascinated with, and tries to imitate. These are really superb toys, very well made, with a lot of open ended play possible. I heartily recommend.
*The toy is the attached photo is a year old and, after lots of rough play, still looks great!
I will however, disagree with the recommendations that a one-year-old play with this stacker. I gave this to my 14-month old son and the yellow top fits perfectly in his mouth. Plus, he uses the green and blue pieces to color (through banging on) our walls. His nursery entry way is covered in green and blue streaks. Fabulous.
I'm going to put this back in his closet until he is old enough to understand it a little better. He has loved tearing it apart and he loves the goofy noises dad makes with the long green tube. He puts it by our mouths constantly, demanding the noises (think toilet paper roll instrument). He enjoys hiding his pounding balls inside the wider rings. And to be fair, he would tell you he loves teething and coloring with it too, but I DON'T love that aspect of the toy. So away it goes.
Regardless of my "complaints" the toy clearly deserves a five star review. It has no impact on the environment, it is very durable, super fun, and is guaranteed to help your child's motor and intellectual development. Another excellent toy from the Plan Toys Company.
